To put it into perspective, the Star Wars merch is right opposite all the cape-shit on the same isle, and whenever some nostalgia-driven parent walks their kid in trying to show them all the neat Star Wars toys, the kids always run right past it to see the Marvel merch. I personally would've preferred if he actually did support Clark's desire to help, but only wanted Clark to be very careful not to get caught doing it.
His view instead was too extreme and ended up costing him his life in a very silly way.

Yes. It works better. No matter how many half-baked excuses they make up for why Clark couldn't expose his powers, the audience still has that small voice in the back of their head saying 'he could have saved him. Why didn't he save him?' That wouldn't have been a problem if the cause of death had been a heart attack.
It's also much better lesson for Clark, having to deal with a loved one dying a 'common' death, and coming to terms with the fact that all humans can and will die, and no matter how strong and powerful you are, you won't always be able to safe them. Because people die. Not only from hurricanes and giant disasters.
