That does seem intentional, specially after the flashback arc and with that sendoff he has between him and his father (Despite their differences, his dad still tries to make it a classy farewell only for him to sour it under his breath). I feel like they did this as a small bait-and-switch: you expected him to recieve the small bit of development Rinnie did but he didn't, because he still tries to maintain himself in his safe space (Just this time, it's replaced with his new nerdy friends) and not attempt to grow into a better person (He still is fine with not finding a job and just live off on his money from the army.).
I'm sure eventually we will have an arc in which his new friends find out how shit he is and drama will ensue.
