Without a doubt, they hit it out of the park in two ways here:
1) Star is just awesomely interesting and fun, with just enough edge to make her a real person. She's super nice, but she gets mad at her best friend, they have fights, etc. Although she makes AWESOME apologies.

Most lolrandom thing about the show are the names of Star's attack (NARWHAL BLAST LOL), but they aren't really supposed to be funny/jokes on their own, just a consistent aesthetic and character trait thing obviously referencing the attack naming conventions of magical girl anime. Also it fits Star's personality to like that kind of shit, and ties into the "lore" of the wand changing form, and probably abilities, to match its current holder.
Not the like the show's normal humor is all that clever or hilarious, but it's usually okay. The black comedy jokes are definitely its strongest point.

I love both GF and SU but they have stuff that drags them down for me.
GF is a fantastic show that is ultimately dragged down by its characters of all things, Mabel is just awful to the point it negates her good traits like being cute and funny and Dipper is stuck in a weird limbo where he should be developed to be a badass but the show doesnt want him to or something, like he needs to be pathetic to be relatable or something.

Yep, I've noticed a lot of people who are like this.
The show LOOKS like silly crap for kids. The color palette, the manic energy, the pacing.
It's only when you pay attention that you realize, holy moly, there's actually a fuck ton going on with this thing.

The puppies LOOK like a dumb random gag.... But they're actually permanent characters. They've been in almost every show, they're always fun, and slowly but steadily, they're killing them off in Star's adventures.

They show that the things that Star does with the wand are PERMANENT. She's on Earth to learn responsibility. She's already transformed one person permanently into a monster, and that wasn't a random gag, either, even though it looked like it.
The wand is a huge responsibility, and it does things that are permanent. Star is using it in a capricious fashion, and it's bitten her several times already.
