Would like to discuss the current state of X-comics because I haven't been on here lately.
What's the consensus on that last twist in Extraordinary? Was that really Rightclops?

I am pleasantly surprised at the quality of all these new X-books. Girlverine started out shitty but looks like it's getting better.

How?
Extraordinary is boring, nonsensical and misses characterizations constantly.
All-New X-Men is mediocre to the point of being completely irrelevant
Uncanny X-Men seems nice enough, but is currently drawn by fucking Land.

Uncanny Avengers actually sort of drew my interest after I originally dismissed it, but I'm not sure if that will actually last.

Why can't the good times last? Why is it that Marvel writers are only capable of coming up with three stories these days: "X-Men break down the middle", "X-Men are on the run" and "X-Men/mutants are on the verge of extinction".

We want to see them win, Marvel. They've been in a downward spiral for so many years it's gotten boring.

>>

>Mutant who can see the future is convinced to just use it to play the stock market by the blue lady she's fucking
>Mutant who can invent infinite clean energy can't actually put it into effect because his powers tell him how to build it, but don't fix the problem that the machine will take years of dedicated focus to build
>Mutants who can stop tsunamis, hurricanes, and earthquakes can also cause them, usually for the purpose of robbing banks and jacking armored cars

Welcome to the X-men, hope you survive the experience.
>>
>>78889673
>robbing banks and jacking armored cars
I've often wondered about those sort of low-level, unimaginative crooks with incredible powers. Hydro-Man, Electro, Speed Demon - wouldn't they make more money in a Heroes For Hire kinda situation? And probably more easily too?
>>
>>78890004
Status quo. Sandman used to be mercenary, even Avenger for short time.
Nope, back to robbing banks and shit.
>>
>>78890004
>wouldn't they make more money in a Heroes For Hire kinda situation? And probably more easily too?
Because they're so unimaginative, they tend to lean towards "low risk, high reward". Being a hero for hire means you need a situation where someone would pay as much, if not more than a Kingpin or Justin Hammer would, and would more likely put you up against people more willing to kill you instead of Spider-Man webbing you up to go back to prison again.
>>
>>78889113
Spider-Man was and sometimes is considered a menace. Some folks also thought that he was a mutie.

In Doctor Strange series there used to be occasionally people protesting outside of his house and considering magic = satanism

Even Avengers got their own share of hatred

>>78889113

>>
>>78889113
there's always an invisible risk that your kid will be born a mutant, and people blame mutants for that because finding out your daughter is and always will be a living radioactve power plant is the kind of thing that fills you with the need to blame someone
non-mutant (and now non-inhuman) teens with powers are really really rare and most manage to maintain their secret identity at least until adulthood.

>>78890004
The recent Captain Falcon issue with Diamondback made a good point about that, there really isn't going to be much demand for that kind of work and competition is going to be high due to all the other guys in the same business. Most actual merc work involves killing people for money and private security, outside a comparatively small number of jobs, mostly involves sitting in an office watching a camera feed. Plus their extensive criminal backgrounds legally prevents them from working security in some states. Realistically, Hydro-Man would be better off in industry - purifying water or in oil fracking, Electro going back to the power company and supplying extra power during peak demand times and as a mobile power station, and Speed Demon would probably work best as a bodyguard since he can react faster than assailants.
>>
>>78888783
>And Marvel really, really, REALLY loves status quo.
but they got the status quo wrong. Until the second half of the 90es the status quo was that the future one that could go terribly wrong or incredibly well, and the x-men had to fight to protect hope and to keep building a better future.
While the villains tried to destroy mutants and the x-men had to stop them and protect the status-quo.
Te current status quo is one where the villain have won and the x-men must keep losing.

Not a huge fan of costume+jacket since with most artists it tends to overbulk the torso and usually comes off clashing with the underlying costume.

Is it bad that I actually want Cyclops to be in Uncanny or All-new Inhumans instead of any of the X-books? I like Soule well enough and McNiven and Caselli are both great artists. In comparison, all the X-books are saddled with either shit or mediocre art and shit or mediocre writing. I hate the way they've been shitting on Cyclops, but at this point, i don't want him anywhere near the X-men. They turned their back on him? Fine, fuck them.

I'm not interested in this whole x-fans vs. inhumans pissing match and just want to see my favorite character(s) appear in good books.

Hoping UA gets better because I need more Cable in my life.

In fact, when I look at the rosters, the only characters I care about in the X-books are:
>EXM
Colossus
>ANXM
Evan
>UXM
Magneto
Which, just, fuck man. It's hard for me to care about an X-book that doesn't have any of the characters I like while also not being interesting enough to be carried on the back of the creative team alone.
>>

A lot of it is because mutants are born that way and you had people like Magneto violently advocating for mutant supremacy. To the average MU citizen this makes it seem like there is a race of people who are born more powerful than them threatening to replace them and saying "get with the program or we'll violent cull you". That's not happening with Spider-Man, Doctor Strange or Reed.

The problem comes from the fact that mutants are born while the others tend to be made. The average MU citizen doesn't need to worry that they're going to be outbred into extinction by a guy who was bitten by a spider, but they DO need to worry about the fact they will by people who are born by seemingly random chance with the X-gene. That was kind of a big part of the background of Morrison's run was the demographic shift. Think of the same reason people get pissed at Mexicans in America or Arabs in Europe.

Aside from Xavier's/Jean Grey's School for Gifted Youngsters what other schools for mutants there have been?

I know that Emma ran one back in the day and she tried to snatch Kitty first for her school, though I can't recall the name, I believe it was destroyed.

But you gotta admit, "get the hell off my island" was neat moment.
And Schism really overstayed its welcome. If I had any say in matter, I'd make Right School create X-Men, while Lame School would have mutants who want to be civilians.

None. There are superhero schools, like Avengers Academy and Braddock Institute, but no mutant schools.

Extraordinary has been extraordinarily terrible.

All New has no impact as the story has no context to the events its based off of.

First uncanny book was kind of meh. why doesn't Archangel have the cosmic wings? Why is he archangel again anyway?
>>
>>78888481
But he did join the x-men when wolverine asked him too. He was their token human for a while.
>>
>>78896899
Archangel =/= cosmic Angel. Originals have no connection to young versions, except they die when young version is killed. But, as you can see, nothing changed with older Warren, he doesn't have cosmic upgrade. Likewise older Scott doesn't remember young Scott's adventure in space.

You're thinking of the wrong Angel. The O5 Angel has the cosmic wings, current angel has been reverted back to Archangel because blahblah Death Seed blahblah stuff no one read in Wolverine and the X-Men.

Honestly, I kind of prefer Archangel being like this literal weapon that Psylocke controls. There's an interesting relationship to explore there... unlike what fucking happened with Psylocke's and Fantomex's relationship. What a clusterfuck that was.

I liked Fantomex alot in Remender's X-Force and Spurrier's X-Force. They came up with some interesting dynamics for him. Everywhere else he's pretty terrible in the hands of "grounded" writers though he's only really been in one other run (Humphries' X-Force).

We'll see how this Fantomex turns out but it's hard to say.

He was a parody from his inception.
A completely over the top version of Gambit.

For me Uncanny is easily the best, total nostalgia bomb, it reads just like X-Men books used to when I started buying X-Men comics many many moons ago.

All-New is a mess, you don't have a feel for most of the cast, Idle, Evan (have they even used their powers yet?) Angel, Iceman and Wolverine might as well not even be in the book.

the book should be renamed "Even As Kids: Beast Hates Scott Summers"

>>78898920

X-Men have only one single villain left.
Uncanny X-Men had to resort to the most obscure 90s villains imaginable just to operate at all.

The last thing we need is for an interesting X-Men villain to go out and fight terrible gimmick Avengers characters in terrible gimmick books.

Surprisingly enough, she's the one Claremont woman who didn't have the lesbian subtext. Instead Claremont gave her one of his other fetishes (mind control) while Dani/Rahne and Kitty/Ilyana got the lesbian subtext.

She kind of bopped around in the '90s looking for her brother and sister with Beast and Wolverine, then showed up in X-Force #75 (the Burning Man issue) with short cropped pink hair and living with two other dykey looking women. Nothing was outright stated but the hints were obvious.

So Claremont I guess saw that, his fetish meter overloaded and we got the Mekanix mini with the not-so-subtle lesbian undertones with her and Kitty... then NM v2 immediately squashed that ship. IIRC the writers at the time mentioned on a forum that they knew they'd catch a lot of shit from Kitty fanboys if they went with making her a lesbian and didn't want to deal with it.

Really, Shan had nothing even remotely resembling any kind of romantic life. And outside of a few minor false starts via blatant hinting (Kitty in Mekanix, Luna in NM/NXM, Warbird in Astonishing) she STILL has no love life whatsoever.

That is true, Marvel rode him hard and dry and then he just disappeared.(Or not? I just never saw him on X-Men stuff after X-treme X-Men.)

Where it went wrong was that you had other writers (Remender and the like) either not getting the concept fo the character or ignoring it in favor of shoehorning him into a role they needed and he only superficially (and very loosely at that) fulfilled. Seems to happen to a lot of Morrison's Marvel characters i.e. what happened to Marvel Boy and Quentin Quire.

Kyle/Yost's NXM will have one of two reactions: you'll either love it or you'll absolutely hate it. I fall into the latter camp; didn't find any of it interesting and it did lasting damage to that generation of kids not in-story but out of it. I get the impression most view them as nothing but PTSD sufferers who will break down when faced with any adversity so better to ignore them.
