Not really.
I actually feel that named weapons detract from the perceived heroism of the wielder.

And dude can kill a Demon with the sword Demonbane.

But someone who murders the fuck out of that Demon with an unnamed sword?

That guy's a total badass.
>>
>>78880334
Had it been just a hunk of sharpened steel that is only important because of who it belonged to, I'd agree with you, but Jack's sword is literally the only thing capable of hurting Aku. The sword is kind of important.
>>
>>78880536
In the very first episode Jack's dad slaps Jack for considering the sword too important and says something like "what use is a weapon compared to the hand who wields it?" And this is the guy that was present when three gods got together to forge this magic sword that is necessary in defeating Aku, and probably knows better than anyone how important it actually is to achieving that end. Still, the one thing he wants to tell Jack before his quest starts is that Jack needs to value himself in getting shit done more than a hunk of metal, magic or not.
>>
>>78880898
He was saying that the sword is useless without it its wielder and that Jack shouldn't rely on it. but that doesn't mean the sword isn't important. Both are needed to accomplish his goal.

someone needs to make a slight edit and this picture is perfect

yeah, with the murder stroke technique, a soldier could grab the blade and strike an enemy with the handguard with a swing or strike them with the pommel with a thrust

so not only are longswords better designed with better steel, they also have fullers while katanas dont

fullers work the same why as I-beams, it gives the blade structural integrity and prevents wobbling

if you were to include all of these points, the picture would be perfect to respond to anyone saying "the katana is the best weapon ever". just one picture- boom, disproven

I don't mind if weapons in fiction have names associated with them, but only specific reasons. Nicknames for a fond piece of equipment used a lot, in-jokes, or the sword was named after or in honor of family members or something.

It does bother me a bit when weapons in fiction are named after the hero's deeds. It's not like the weapon did cool shit, the person who weilded it did. Why give credit to the weapon?

Maybe I have just been in too many tabletop campaigns where named weapons were cause for players to act like dicks and it soured me on the idea.

Well, at least in my groups it's like that for D&D type games at least. Counting xp takes work and doesn't really contribute to fun for us.
Also, we typically run with party level. If you can't come due to RL, why penalise you? If you aren't interested enough to come, seems the campaign isn't for you. Communicate and drop from that one, no hard feelings.
(In case of character death/replacement we sometimes choose to go in at a lower level to be the FNG, then get some catchup levels)

No it wasn't, the quality of the ore directly affects the quality of the steel, traditionally forged katanas break very easily compared to western blades. Not only that, the spine is too soft. If the edge itself doesnt chip, the blade will bend when introduced to the same stress tests as westerns swords.

the fuller displaces material in the blade, but it ALSO strengthens the blade and prevents wobbling. Like I said, it works like an I-beam.

just stop, you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

And it hasn’t got destiny written all over it. It’s practically unique, in fact.
>>
>>78892476

Well what would you do with one? You've already got stuff like silver bullets for dealing with magic-tier threats, and stuff like homing/penetrating/infinite ammo and shit are the realm of sci-fi.

I think the closest thing I've seen to a magic gun is the toon revolver from WFRR. I'm sure anime has plenty of examples but I'm not very experienced there.

Basically I just don't know how you could even begin to apply "magic" to a gun and achieve something distinct and memorable.

"Jack's sword" sounds good to me.
>>

Naming swords is an old tradition and not only on Japan.

Anyway, I guess CN wanted to avoid Japanese names as much as possible because they didn't want to confuse kids. Remember, these guys actually believe kids are retarded

fucking DROPPED
>>
>>78876789
The names were not important , in fact if you paid close attention they never gave 'Jack' 's real name.

People called him Jack but he never said his real name.
>>
>>78892454
Honestly that was actually a pretty clever way to help the dialogue still make sense.
>>
Why didn't he just melt the sword down and make bullets out of it so that he could shoot Aku from afar?
>>
A lot of weapon names from myth are actually pretty lame when translated. They tended to the literal. The name of Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, for instance, means "smasher."

Could jack defeat Guts?
>>
>>78894946
Made by gods

Most likely would get murdered to hell for trying that

Plus I wouldn't bank on the gods keeping that sword's ability when you essentially chopped it up to chuck it at someone.

He's going to have a duel with his brother, how is he supposed to do that if he's dead?

You guys aren't very bright.

Okay, I guess the entire lands could be taken over almost at some point and he gets resurrected...

Dude.
Simple

Each bullet a different element
Life death fire water earth and an empty to double up

>>

Water and ice are the same goddamn thing

it's fire, water, wind, earth, lightning, metal
>>
>>78878555
Yeah, cuz nameless ronin/cowboy/faggot hasn't been done to death. The entire show is painfully derivative. The sword isn't named because it's unimportant, just like its owner. Both are mere tools.
>>
>>78904712
It's not the actual ice that's the element, it's the idea of the cold that conceptualizes into it's visible form when it interacts with what happens to be water. Lightning and fire are both are both still just forms of energy expressing themselves.

It lets you reduce weight without losing stiffness, NOT become magically stiffer than 100% fill.

The Abbot names it in the first book. He calls it Ratdeath.

The name is forgotten in all subsequent books, even the direct sequel. The sword is simple The Sword of Martin the Warrior.

The Creation Blades, the Sword of Superman, the Spear of Destiny, Heart of the Universe, Ultimate Nullifier, or any Infinity Gem.
>>
>>78912502
>Spear of Destiny

All I know is that Wolf3D temporarily turned into Doom when fighting Spear of Destiny's final boss.
>>
>>78912502
Stormbringer is directly responsible for killing and devouring gods and the destruction of the universe.

Its also a malicious fucker on top of all that
>>
>>78912739
Creation Blades have cut through a reality warper and prevented them from using their full powers.
Sword of Superman could make the user nigh-omniscient, nigh-omnipresent, nigh-omnipotent.
Spear of Destiny could injure/kill high-tier cosmics like the Spectre.
Heart of the Universe could kill the entire multiverse and was only stopped in the end by God Himself.
Ultimate Nullifier made Galactus afraid, who himself is a universal force. It can also alter/recreate timelines.
Infinity Gems, now that I think of it, may not be a good choice. Only the Reality Gem is a contender, for its obvious reality-warping powers.

>>
>>78912235

>>
>>78913337
Heart of the Universe isn't even a weapon and the superman sword is complete horseshit as a concept. Nullifier and infinite gems as well since the power levels are inconsistent as fuck and change depending on what sort of asspull the new writer wants to pull.
Stormbringer is on par with the Lance and the Creation Blades and is more than likely a step above all that since it's sentient and can summon its brothers that all share the same destructive power it has if it feels like it.

>So the I-beam profile created by a fuller isn't responsible for any increase in stiffness over an equivalently sized solid section. But what if the fuller wasn't created by removing material, but rather by moving material around?

This is actually pretty simple: In that case, because of conservation of mass, the outer dimensions of the piece will no longer be the same. So it is possible for a hammered fuller to increase the stiffness, because you are not removing material... assuming that is that you don't grind that excess off to make an edge.
>>
>>78914899
i can only see one error so far

*Two-handed grip allows shield use
>>
>>78917989
>well cut my legs off and call me shorty, nice work anon!

you are welcome. i have been reading and learing about swords for a few years now, and it is really amazing how much better weapons the euro swords were, yet the japanese swords get all the hype and thats just totally wrong

so i made a thing, sorry for the typos, but that has every point ive been able to learn so far

Also, the rennaisance rapier is a better weapon for duels than a longsword, but the longsword is best fror battles, and both of them are better than a katana in either circumstance

true fact, one hand swords alow sideways stance for much better range, or, katana-style front facing stance only with a shield for much better defense in either case, katan guy is at a big disadvantage.
>>
>>78878199
But it's big sword.

Does anyone in the cartoon refer to Jack's weapon as "a katana"?
>>
>>78911319
>It lets you reduce weight without losing stiffness, NOT become magically stiffer than 100% fill

It's not like they carved out the fuller and then discarded the metal. So it doesn't reduce any weight, it just changes shape, changes into a more stiff shape.
