All of those character types looks like shitty comic relief to me.

When someone else does it and it makes a billion dollars at the box office.

Never because audiences aren't interested in animated movies about a bunch of nerds going on a treasure hunt

Such as...? Do you mean the 2D/3D hybrid works of the Disney Renaissance, which prominently used CGI to fill in the hard-to-animate crowd sequences and fast-paced action, or the heavily rotoscoped works of the 1940s?

Because nothing else has ever really been worth anybody's time.
>>
>>78871981
We're only getting a demo reel funded and a bit more so he can get the rest funded.

just be happy we don't get feature length movies animated with 2d tweening.
>>
>>78870599
The Princess and the Frog was the nail in 2D's coffin as far as cinema is concerned. The world has a hard-on for CGI that they don't have for flat animation.

I like 2D western animation but as long as China doesn't, it just isn't economically feasible.

Well, back in the day, Disney was making a ton of 2D animated movies (ex. Treasure Planet) but they were losing to 3D shit (ex. Shrek) and Pixar was making a ton of money so they decided to ditch 2D and go 3D. The first 3D movie they made was Chicken Little which everyone hated. Then they made Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt. Those did okay so Disney went back to 2D and made The Princess and the Frog. That was also okay but it was more expensive to make so they went back to 3D and made Tangled which made a shit ton of money. After that they made Winnie the Pooh in 2011 (which again, no one cared about) so they decided to say fuck it and now we're full 3D babyyyy!!! Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, and Big Hero 6 made so much money and Zootopia is next! No WAYYYYY they are going back! RIP 2D HELLO 3D I want to pass in my sleep.
>>
>>78870599

when they bring back silent film.
>>
>>78870599
Once CGI starts to stagnate and someone makes a 2D movie that makes massive bank at the same time.

>head cannon

Chicken Little was #1 in the box office it's first and second week, and got mixed reviews.

Princess and the Frog was in no way a reaction to it, it was an attempt to see if 2d animation could be held onto in a legacy sense, and if one or two 2d films every couple of years could at least be profitable, and it was successful in the sense that Disney did want to follow through with more 2d in a limited way, but the huge amount of money that 3d has pulled in basically sucked all the oxygen out of the room, it came out right before Avatar, and since the huge success of Frozen Disney doesn't have time or resources to waste on moderate profitability vs. printing money.
>>
>>78870599

If there's a string of 3D films that barely break even or outright bomb while a 2D film makes a nice profit, you'd see renewed interest in them by studios.

Had The Simpsons Movie came out this year and made the same as it did in 2007, it would have outperformed offerings from Dreamworks, Blue Sky, and Pixar. That definitely would have gotten the attention of executives.

Of course, we would have just gotten a bunch of 2D films based on shows but it still would have lead to more 2D films.

2D:
>Treasure Planet. Domestic Total Gross: $38,176,783
>The Princess and the Frog. Domestic Total Gross: $104,400,899
>Winnie the Pooh. Domestic Total Gross: $26,692,846.

3D:
>Chicken Little. Domestic Total Gross: $135,386,665.
>Bolt: Domestic Total Gross: $114,053,579
>Tangled. Domestic Total Gross: $200,821,936

Okay, Chicken little might have made more money than I thought but it was a critical failure. I'm not saying that Princess and the Frog was a direct reaction to it but it might have played into it. My point is that 3D is cheaper to make and it generates a lot more income. These are the films that were around during shifting years from 2D to 3D. If you notice, the 2D films made a lot less than the 3D ones. But hey, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Disney doesn't care about money. Maybe they really really like 3D because it looks pretty...

I once toured the Disney Animation Studio as a student when I was studying Animation in college. They were currently working on Reck-it Ralph, and most of the interior was decked out in that theme. We got to ask questions of our tour guide, who worked there as part of the animation crew, whenever we felt like it. I asked him at one point if there was ever going to be a return to 2D animated films, and he told me,
"2D is basically seen here as the Philosophy Majors of the film industry."

He must of thought it was funny, but the entire group went through an awkward silence; you could feel everyone disapproved of this answer. He then left us with a making of film and stepped out for awhile. He was late by a couple minutes to continue the tour, which didn't feel so light spirited anymore.

On a related note, I say let the Japanese stick to 2d, they're the only ones that seem to have their heart into it.

I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason why they haven't done a feature in the Paperman renderer.

Smart idea to say that

Especially those who were willing to go on a tour through Disney
>>
>>78877079
I don't get it
>>
there's the adventure time film coming. i'm pretty sure pen ward wouldnt allow that film if it wasnt 2d.
>>
>>78876583
Bet he never made the mistake of saying that to a tour group again.
>>
>>78876766
please tell me this is bait
>>
>>78877525
What the fuck does it mean though?
What's so bad about Philosophy Majors?
>>
>>78877525
I'm pretty sure that he didn't care, and his tardiness had zero to do with any perceived faux pas.
>>
>>78877606
Seriously. Who the fuck else is going to make my coffee at Starbucks? Though I'm sure the competition is brutal between them, the literary majors, and the art history majors.
>>
>>78877606
from my perspective, philosophy majors are great in terms of understanding theory, but its practical applications are lacking in comparison to other majors. Not that I completely agree with that but i think thats what most people think.
>>
>>78877678
I still don't get it.
>>
>>78877619
Likely.

As a pack of greedy Jews, I doubt anyone at Disney gives even a slight fuck how much people like traditional animation. Quite simply, the profit margin on it is worse no matter how many people love it.

>>78876899
Frankly, you can still tell it's 3D quite easily. If they even give a shit about trying to emulate 2D animation seriously, they'd do it with a more refined effort.
>>
>>78875203

well, my point was that 3d makes so much money vs. 2d that no one is going to bother to make any 2d for a good long while. so I'm not sure why you think I disagree with you point on 3d vs 2d, just your history was incorrect.
>>

Mighty Space Miners.
>>
>>78872392
No, the Winnie the Pooh movie was, and they deliberately sabotaged that one.
>>
>>78872033
Relatively speaking, in terms of cartooning styles it's on the realistic side of things. Not necessarily in terms of proportion, but in terms of anatomical detail. Think Capcom fighting game style. Very stylized, but with lots of grounded bone and muscle structure.
>>
>>78870599
that isn't realistic

and they won't unless some 2D movie comes out and does super well while 3D movies start flopping hard. The whole thing about 3D is that it doesn't costs as much as 2d
>>
>>78879728
2D isn't actually all that expensive.
