>Teenage Rebecca Sugar writes fanfiction about Invader Zim getting redeemed, realizing humans are good, and making friends with his former enemies
>when she gets TV show she makes a character that kind of looks and acts a lot like Invader Zim
>After they are the villain for a while she has them getting redeemed, realizing humans are good, and making friends with his former enemies

Are there any other examples of artists creating characters that are essentially wish fulfillment of already existing characters?

The only one I can think of is Bendis literally being able to write wish fulfillment stories about his waifu Kitty Pryde.
>>
Peridot isn't incompetent shes just ignorant

Batman Beyond had a character that was blatantly Kraven in every way but appearance, and an episode that was a Fantastic 4 Au

>Are there any other examples of artists creating characters that are essentially wish fulfillment of already existing characters?

Hell, a lot of ancient Greek plays and later literature connected to mythology or legend (say the King Arthur stories) was LITERALLY fanfiction wish fulfillment about existing characters.

But I imagine there's much more of this going on then we'll ever notice.
>>
>>78854275
Holy shit, why didn't I put the pieces together. Pede looks a long like an Ed Edd & Eddy character come to think of it.
>>

King Arthur especially .The Death of King Arthur was literally medieval fanfic.

OP, just wait until you realize that almost everyone's acting is really just a re-hash of some older actor's acting.

We all of us grew up with vaudville characters, even though vaudville was stone dead by the time our grandparents were born.

To be honest, I think there are nothing but examples.

Basically everyone who creates something is building off a criticism of something else they like. In Sugar's case, she liked Invader Zim but not its cynicism and negative portrayal of humanity. So she made something more suited to her tastes.
>>
I'm surprised Sugar didn't create some character that was a ripoff of Dib and have Peridot fall in love with them since she's a huge fujoshit.
>>
Johns and Stargirl was essentially therapy for him, wasn't it?
>>
>>78854406
Didn't she draw gay shota porn of Edd and Eddy?
>>
Does this mean if I change all the names and tweak the circumstances my convoluted Gundam crossover fanfic could one day be published?
>>
>>78854406
Ruby and Sapphire don't act like Edd and Eddy. However, I think it does come from a belief that opposites build the strongest relationships because they're those attracted to one another and they go greater lengths to make it work. Shit, look at Rose and Greg. One's from earth with his head in the stars and the other is from space with her feet firmly planted in earthly reality. Connie and Steven despite getting along exceptionally are vastly different as well.
>>
>>78854618
It worked for fifty shades of grey.

I think for every single Usagi Yojimbo story that Stan comes up with himself there's at least one other that's him doing an homage or retelling of something. The man wants to take every samurai and Japanese folklore story and turn it into comic form (Stan if you're reading this: shine on your crazy diamond).

Also Terra was based on everything Wolfman and Perez thought made Kitty Pryde unbearable.

Basically yeah, Peridot has a huge ego and when YD didn't masturbate furiously to her brilliant ideas right then and there she just thought, "fuck this." She probably hadn't interacted with her before and could believe Homeworld valued her amazingness, then she finally talks to YD and she shits on her, and Peri also sees that YD is kind of illogical and simple-minded ("gggrrrr me smash planet") from her POV which shatters her faith.

It's like if Zim was allowed to be a little less crushingly stupid, and actually accepted that his mission was a lie AND that the Tallest are retards who only care about stuffing their faces with snacks, maybe this might happen.

>>78855904
It's not a 100% comparison but pretty close. She never came to Earth to hide among us in order to conquer us, and she's not as flat-out stupid as Zim. Her problem is mostly being socially retarded and not understanding the nuances of human interaction, which she's slowly picking up.

Her personality is pretty Zim-like, though.

Direct quotes like pic related make it clear that the creators are very aware of the resemblance, but obviously her character is moving in a very, very different direction now. I don't think the resemblance is a problem, just an interesting side note.

First wave of invading alien species accompanied by brute (who is defeated in the initial encounter) that later becomes a tentative ally and begrudging friend to the hero. Seemingly loyal to space alien boss, eventually tells boss to fuck off and joins the good guys. They're both shorties. The show takes the time to make them the butt of jokes at points. Only differences are color scheme and certain personality traits (Vegeta's not really a technician like Peridot is). Their role in the story and relationship to the hero is pretty much the same. That said, there's much less of a rivalry dynamic between Peri and Steven.

"Nothing in common" is blatantly false.

Exodus is a retcon to make the Israelites look more legitimate.
When these people fled from Egypt, they were likely listed as a small bunch of Canaanite slaves who only heard of Yahwe after they ran across the Sinai and mixed into a group of other Canaanite dissidents who then became Israel.
Later writing is mostly about getting their monotheism on track and erasing the thousand local gods their people still worshipped. Like Yahwe's wife...

If I remember correctly, Vasquez had that ending planned out for a while.

Zim and Dib were going to have a planetary fight, similar to that one episode where they used planets as their weapons. It was going to end with Zim befriending Dib and him revealing he was an alien or something of that sort.

Kid Goku meets Sailor Moon? I know Ian admitted they've played with harem tropes

>being the blue girl is suffering
Every anime ever, Evangelion and Utena come to mind. I'm half-way through Utena, but the brown-blue girl seems to be artificially built like Rei, so it would not surprise me if SU dwelled into Lapis's purpose and imprisonment, and the people who controlled her life

>blatant yuribait
Utena, pedal to the metal

Invader Zim. The gems are a non-joke Irken empire, though it's simplyfied as planetary destruction instead of economic imperialism that lets the others live

That's mostly my understanding of it as well, except for one detail: As I understand it, there was no *literal* flight from Egypt; the proto-Israelites were never physically slaves IN Egypt so much as that their Canaanite culture was a vassal state to Egypt and so they construed themselves as sort of metaphorically slaves to Egypt. The peasant-folk of Canaan rose up against their feudal lords and killed them for serving these Egyptian foreigners, thus escaping Egyptian "slavery" and also "destroying" Canaan, creating their own monotheistic version of the previous religion including, as you allude, getting rid of the worship of their god's wife, Asherah. Though interestingly if you look closely enough, you can still find a number of interesting artifacts of that polytheistic version of the religion embedded in the early part of the bible. Heck, right at the beginning of the bible you have their god saying "Let us create them, man and woman, in our images." And only slightly later you have a magical talking snake trying to persuade Eve to eat of the fruit of wisdom, which is MUCH later retconned as being the devil, but who is never explained in the actual text of Genesis. This makes a lot more sense once you realize that god's wife, Asherah, was a goddess of wisdom who's holy symbol was a snake coiled around a tree.

It depends on how much you buy into the gems having no gender. If you assume they're all female, then yeah, they're pretty much all lesbians.
>>
>>78863105

If you want to get technical, the gems are genderless.

But Pearl is totally gay for Rose.

Ruby and Sapphire are the gayest ever.

Garnet is a physical manifestation of gay romance.

Peri is either going to go gay for Lapis or Amethyst.

The gems are technically incapable of being gay as they're monogendered. But it's a pretty safe bet that Sucrose used this as a loophole to safely place lesbians on a primetime kids show.

Basically, nobody is actually gay, but they may as well be

Also there's Steven, he's often openly feminine, but that's to be expected consdering his upbringing and there's Connie for him.
>>

Autism is an issue of the brain and the mind, not the body. It's safe to assume that the gem is the "brain" of the body, where all the thinking takes place. Pearl's clearly somewhere else, neurodivergent is a good word for it. I wouldn't place Peridot very far away, if not further along the path. They're both autistic as all hell imo

No it doesn't. What do yo think the definition of gay is? If the gems are all women, and they are sexually attracted to each other, they are gay. They are attracted to people of the same sex. That's the definition of homosexual.
>>
>>78864487
the gems are alien rocks, they don't have gender
>>
>>78864487
If they only have one "gender", that technically means they don't have a gender.

They don't produce offspring via sexual reproduction. They may have characteristics that we associate with human females, but they are not sexually differentiated within their own race.

They are not gay because they have no gender. They are neither male nor female because the distinction doesn't exist for them. They aren't even biological.
>>

>>
>>78864936
Well, I don't think they have any sex at all.
>>
>>78864936
You do realize that gender and sex are commonly used interchangeably in modern English, right?

But let's do definitions. Those that make distinctions use gender to mean "social conventions associated with the male or female sex" and sex to mean "either of the two main categories (male and female) into which humans and many other living things are divided on the basis of their reproductive functions".

Sex is the state of being biologically male or female. Gems have no sex. Just like how bacteria have no sex.

This got me wondering. What do you think is the shortest amount of time after a work's creation before it's acceptable to use a character from that work in your own thing. Take something like Frankenstein or Dracula that tons of different works use just because they like the character? Is it the public domain or can it be sooner? Excluding possible legal trouble that can be waved away as parody.

Way too easy to brush things off as "kids will be kids!" but those kids will be adults one day, and they'll carry their retarded ideas in to adulthood if they aren't corrected. If you see "gay" stuff from fans 95% of the time it will be projection. The word "gay" has never been used once in the series, and there is no "gay propaganda being exposed to children."

There are two perceivably female minor characters who have affection for each other and fuse to create one of the main characters. People like to believe that the act of fusing is meant to be a parallel to sex even though the argument is very loose, cherrypicked, and implies that it's perfectly okay for little kids to fuck each other silly. Take that as you will.
>>
>>78866972
We've seen:
- Gem physiology: That they aren't organic and don't have literal 'skin' or even organs, for that matter. Completely hollow on the inside and they cannot be killed unless their gem is destroyed.
- What certain gem types typically look or behave like, where they are made, and how they are made.
- Even more gem culture: what early Earth gem colonies were like, some 'basic' economic details, caste systems, etc.
- Gem techonology more in-depth: computers, long-distance communication, (phones) more electronic weapons, etc. Whereas before it just seemed like they were 'magic' and had 'magic rooms' but there were no electronics involved.
- The reveal that monsters are corrupted gems, where previously it was unknown where they came from or how they got 'corrupted'.

Among other things...

>What certain gem types typically look or behave like, where they are made, and how they are made.
We know how quartz are made and nothing else.

>Even more gem culture: what early Earth gem colonies were like, some 'basic' economic details, caste systems, etc.
They didn't have a colony on Earth. And what do we know little about their classism

>The reveal that monsters are corrupted gems, where previously it was unknown where they came from or how they got 'corrupted'.
They squished that into a small part of an episode and had Amethyst say "oh yeah the monsters used to be like us kek"

Not sure what most of this has to do with world building. Barely any of this had development either, it was just told to us by a character through exposition

That's true of Zim too, to an extent. He's surprisingly competent in his own self-centered way. such as when he was sent to the boot camp planet, or when he was imprisoned by that mall cop... how many episodes did he show-up Dib in the end? The water balloon one comes to mind, but I'm sure there were others. The best example of Zim's strengths and flaws is the episode with the time piggies, because he was consistently effective in that episode... until he unwittingly went too far and was undone by his own hubris. A similar case could be made for Peridot, who probably would've won her fight with Pearl if she hadn't goaded her.

They're fucking magic. Their bodies aren't rock. They're magical energy projections. It's been repeatedly shown that they are whatever shape, size, and weight that they want to be. They even automatically adjust their weight to suit different gravity.
Maybe it's not that the show doesn't have world-building, maybe you just need to learn to pay attention.

And also, you should probably learn what the phrase world-building actually means, because you blatantly don't know what it actually means.

Their bodies can only perform human-like functions like eating and sexual reproduction when they choose to shapeshift the necessary internal organs. [You can pick this apart like why do they cry/blush/etc. because these function also reflect the presence of internal organs, but you know.]

Otherwise, I believe their bodies *feel* organic and human even though they are not. They have skin and hair and body heat and all that.

What would be exceptional world building? Non-/co/ also welcome, and bonus for intrige

SU's world reads as fan-fiction, but it's done a better job at having me play it frame by frame to catch something, or rewatch episodes when new lore surfaces to pick up on interactions I didn't notice before (and many different times with the same scene).

Other media I enjoy, off the top of my head:
- Invader Zim: I loved the world-building, the Irken empire, the Earth's ways, but nothing was a head scratcher. All you got from paying lots of attention were hidden references to other shows, or cameos
- Samurai Jack: Loved the premise, but everything was on the surface
- ATLA: idem. In fact, lack of subtlety in many cases. idem for Korra
- Fargo (the tv series): well thought out, and the first season really built up to the second one, but it was very in your face. These weren't *subtle* hints to an earlier event
- The Idiot (Dostoevsky): great story, great characters, great tangles, great shenanigans, very well thought out... wait this actually had quite a bit of nice forshadowing, but the setting itself was just Russia. And most great reveals were thing you just didn't know until you knew them. When myshkin says he's a prince it's a surprise to the other characters, not the reader. The plot had forshadowing and symbolisms, not the world-building.
- Stuff by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Timeline): Very nice ideas, but he straight up told you everything. There wasn't much left for you to connect the dots

why did i write so much. My point is, as weak as it might be, the way SU drops subtle hints of lore really does it for me.

Irken/Gem society
>Military Alien race who are artificially created in mass numbers with the purpose of concurring planets and serving their empire
>Social hierarchy where height plays a massive role
>Leaders are ridiculously taller than subordinates
>No empathy for other lifeforms

Peridot/Zim

>Very ignorant/naive about earth and its properties
>Uses weird alien descriptions of body parts for comedic effect
>Same speech manners and ways of addressing people - The Dib human, the Steven etc.

There are a lot more similarities. Peridot is obviously inspired by Invader Zim, which Sugar was a big fangirl of and produced both art and fanfic for in the early 2000's. Pic related is her IZ self-insert with Dib from her now defunct dA.

We have this discussion all of the time. Fusion is not sex, but there are obvious parallels.

>Lewd dance moves leading up to some fusions
>Garnet literally spreading her legs so Amethyst can jump into her
>Gems acting very flustered/excited when presented with the option to fuse
>Fusion being partly treated as a deeply intimate experience and a way for two gems to express their love and 'become one'.
>Pearl fusing with Rose with a very intimate dance in front of Greg to make him jealous
>Pearl covering Steven's eyes while Amethyst and Garnet fuse as she's blushing herself
>The way Garnet was trying to help Peridot - "it's okay if you aren't ready".
>Ruby and Sapphire lying in the grass talking after their fusion and how Sapphire had never 'done it before'.

These are parallels that are made to go completely over a young audience's head, but become very obvious as an adult.

Fusion is sometimes a tool to become stronger, but is also used way to express intimacy and love in many cases. That love can also be be friendly love or childish romance, such as in Steven and Connie's case. It is a lot of things, and the show treats it a such.

Well on the one hand I'd say Peridot was a legitimate threat to the planet earth who was stopped by the Crystal gems who crashed her ship and dropped her threat level, compared to Zim, whose own incompetence made him a threat only to himself, and occasionally Dib. inb4 listed number of times Zim actually proved competent/dangerous. Lets not get into that. Regardless of exceptions, the point of Invader Zim was that he was an alien who was shit at invading planets and sent to Earth just to get him out of his superior's hair. Peridot herself is not a strong adversary, especially robbed of her weapons and superior technology, but she does represent a an invading alien force that legitimately has ill intentions for the Planet Earth, as opposed to the Irken Empire who really don't give a damn about this backwoods mud ball.
So no, I really don't think Peridot was designed as a Zim Ersatz simply for the purpose of recreating fanfiction into her own show.
On the other crazy fan theory hand... one must admit it IS suspicious that both the Irken race and the Gem race have a strange hierarchy that is based, at least partially, on how tall an individual is.
