The fact that they take more risk in certain kind of jokes, plenty of actually good references and those damn deliveries make this pure gold.
Mario isn't much of a character to begin with, especially because their games don't and shouldn't give space for character development, its all about the gameplay and level design.

I agree with this, but at the same time, it doesn't hurt to add a bit more of a subtle personality during/in between leveks. Take Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for example. He constantly interacts with the environment around him, almost everything he does he shows emotion to, yet none of it takes away from the gameplay. Something subtle like that would be pretty good.

Classic Nintendo always has the mindset of the character being "you" the player (like how in Punch-Out, Little Mac is "starring you!" or something like you're the actor of his part), and I don't think they want to change that notion with their main man by giving him too much personality.
