Spend time with his family.
Then he dies for 7 years. But when he comes back, he spends 10 years with his family. By the time he goes to train Uub his kids are 17 and 28 years old. I'm pretty sure they're ok with not seeing their dad everyday, considering Goten is around the age most people go off to college, and Gohan is the age most people have long since moved out of the house. "But Goku's abandoning his family by leaving halfway across the world!" you cry. Yeah, he's abandoning his family, most of which, including his 5 year old grandaughter, can travel across the world in minutes(which is the first thing we seePan doing!). Chichi lives for her kids more than anything, so I doubt she cares when she has Pan around, and as for finances, I'm sure Gohan has that covered.

And the issue there was basically just Goku not understanding that Gohan wasn't like he was as a kid. It was a flaw, but it doesn't make him terrible. Goku fought the Red Ribbon Army and the Demon King all by himself, he expected Gohan to have the same strength of will because he had no other reference.
