Reposting for new thread

Not exactly a web comic but I've decided to start an ongoing series in which I have no script or story in mind, and just draw what I feel I want to practice or what I want to see. It'll probably be a massive failure but hopefully I'll improve a little.

Also, would anyone be able to throw me a guide on scanning/editing images? They always seem way too big on screen and the colors keep getting messed up. Any help would be great.

>>
>>78779923
Do you hope to someday not draw like a 12 year old?

shit I wish I had some drawings from when I was 12. Oldest ones I have are 13, and I don't have anything from pre-16 scanned. All I remember is I drew a lot of cruddy dinosaur and dragon heads in profile view with tsurime eyes, and a fuckton of superheroes that were all just marvel and power rangers mashed together
this is the closest I have to how shit it was back then.. though made later.
>>

Hi /co/ im working on a diesel punk flavoured sci fi comic, are there any tropes you think I should definitely avoid? Do you think that kind of genre can be popular at all?
>>
>>78783403
huh.. diesel punk eh? not sure I know what that is
It makes me think that scifi's ubiquitous 'ohnoes environment' bullshit could actually be pretty appropriate for some kind of smoky polluted world of diesel running everything
for that matter that ought to happen in steampunk but it seems to conveniently ignore coal most of the time.
>>
>>78783081
i normally hate your comic but the OOC joke made me laugh desu
>>
>>78783573
Dieselpunk is similar to steampunk but very dirty. Overalls instead of tophats. In a basic sense.
>>
>>78783881
oh okay. i kinda always thought the two went together. top hats for some, overalls for their employees
>>
>>78784060
Haha I'm sure they do, I was just trying to give a vague idea. Steampunk is typically associated with Victorian aesthetics, dieselpunk is more pulp aesthetics. Last Exile is an anime that shows a good example of dieselpunk.

>>
>>78785004
jesus, a NON-EMPTY beer. that is asstastic territory. all i can think is
>you made me bleed my own blood!
there's neat stuff here, like jam just modifying the question when there's no answer. and I have to admit, as much as beatrice's cliche attitude has me yelling at the screen, she sells it. I can see why she thinks this way.
>>
>>78785222
Yeah. Different feelings but along the same lines. They get confused for eachother enough it doesn't matter too much.

The point is dirty diesel power and pollution play a big role in my comic as well as overall rounded and pulpy designs. And some other sci fi garbage like transhumanist concepts but uh... any webcomics with similar settings that reached an audience?

Any advice for an aspiring webcomic artist?

I've tried my hand at it once before but only made it ~60 pages in before I lost steam and got self conscious about the early art.

I'm hoping I can keep motivated to work on this but I'm anxious about pitfalls.
>>
>>78785791
this kind of comic requires a ton more work than others, so I've never seen one really explore it all while not becoming slow, boring, or both. Do your best though!

Hells yeah. I might put together a little "The Sisters Sketchbook" of all the doodles that don't see the light of day. Fanservice, concept doodles, etc.

So if anyone wants to see anything in particular, lemme know and I'll add it to the list.

Here's some Erin and Connor. Because they were originally gonna be makin out in the first panel of this update, but Writer decided to just make it a callback to their first date.
>>
>>78785870
Oh no, my original attempt at a comic was slice of lifey and was going to take a cliff dive of a twist but I never got to that part.

I have chapter 1 of my current comic thumbed and sketched out (40 pages I think?) But only e pages acually completed. Its no where near a state of 'ready to show the internet'.

Just looking for advice on getting it out there I guess. Finding an audience. The usual worries and questions.

/co/ aspiring artist again/still with a different question. Pros amd cons of black and white/greyscale/full color? Do you think full colour (or at least toned) catches the eyes of readers better? Besides saving time, are there other benefits to black and white?
>>
>>78787835
Well, a usually unmentioned benefit of grayscale is that if you decide to go back and color stuff, you've already got your values set up -- all you need to do is just add some color.

I went with mostly black and white because it's fastest and I felt it suited the comic's mood and themes best.
>>
>>78787643
Aw, thanks!

>>78787835
Black n white isn't bad on its own, it's just a turn-off for "the average reader" whose used to everything in color. That being said, if you look at the mainstream chiaroscuro users like Mike Mignola or David Mazzuchelli or Klaus Janson, and aim to be like them, you oughta be fine.

I've found the best technique is just "Make everything that's supposed to be black, black, then keep adding black."

Plus, it's cheaper to print. But if printing isn't an issue, toss a single color on there.

The entire page can be that one color plus black, or it can be one character that's a single color. But something that simple is enough to make the "average reader" more likely to give your work a chance.

And with that, I'm taggin out. Still taking suggestions for The Sisters Sketchbook if you peeps still got em.
>>
>>78788073
>>78787896
Hmmm, thanks for the input! I'm always wondering what works epbest for things, and I agree that mood should play a big part. I love the aesthetic you've got going, Firgof!

Currently, I've been doing mine in a sor of sepia soft shaded look, but its pretty time consuming and I cant help but wonder if a crisper toned looke (similar to what you've got going on actually) might look better.

In my first attempt at a comic it was full colour/shaded, but I don't think I'd ever do that again. You've got to admire artists like Sarah Ellerton who do just full on painted webcomics.

How do you deal with old pages or seeing improvement so drastic? I know the logical soution is to go 'wow I've improved so much' but worrying about consistacy is something I think a lot of new webcomic artists face (from what I've read and currently fear anyway).

I can't help but begin the year reflecting over how my reader numbers are pretty much on the exact same level as the start of last year. My audience grew nicely and steadily the first couple of years and it looked like I was on a path to full time employment. But eventually the growths just slowly stagnated even though I've kept working just as hard.

And meanwhile, during these years, I've watched new comics be created that just surpassed mine in popularity in no time and even become full time jobs for their creators, even though they're objectively none the better, and some even worse than mine.

So feeling a bit down here. Maybe it's time to start fresh with a new comic, maybe people's tastes have already changed enough since early 2010's that I my comic has run out of audience to grow into.

writers and artists have an uneven demand, so if you want to work with a writer you'll have your pick of the litter, assuming you're any good.
The question is how well you think you can work with others on something like this. for some it's too personal and they can't accept others' vision as well. in the meantime keep trying to write, just relax and shut off your brain and let stuff happen. Last night I started imagining what it would be like if I had to suddenly write an original 80s fantasy film a la Legend, and what I would do.. and SO many ideas popped out. dialogue and everything

I've heard it said that van gogh's unique style resulted from stereoblindness. I personally feel that being stereoblind made me identify more with 2d art than 3d reality. When I first saw TV-console video games I thought of them as cartoons, mentally converting the NES sprites into cels with a lot more detail than they actually had. then I drew those characters and those were my headcanon designs.

Panel layouts are hard.

But basically, as Nancy and Petunia are gonna start their escape from the cave, Nancy is distracted by a big swampy bog in this cave that she just HAS to cannonball into. Nancy jumps in the bog, nasty swampy muck splashing Petunia.

Making comics is harder than they seem. Making sure the story flows well, knowing how to lay out panels, keeping characters IN character, etc.

Only ppl who seem to have it together comic wise and have potential are, Jasper Gold (awesome art, but it feels like it might be a generic spaghetti western rip-off, he's going to have to think outside the box to break out of the monotony of western cowboy gunslinger stereotypes), Cold Fusion (some goofy humor, decent art, some damn good jokes, and consistency) and the guy who makes that frog knight comic (that guy, that guy has a future in comics, his story and characters fits the art, he stays away from memes, modern refs. and I genuinely feel he has some great originality which is always refreshing and interesting to read, it feels kinda out there, but not too far gone, just orbiting around a perfect mix), Dewd, (idk about him, anatomy and quality control 3/10, story no idea what is going on other than crazy face, Annabeth, sexual stuff, or randomness, the comic doesn't know what it is or what it wants to be, its just kind of a blob for the sake of being a blob.) Other comics I see here, smeh, so-so, Scandinavia Princess was an eye popper and a show stopper art wise and charcter wise, it felt like a Peter Pan rip-off though, but was too Disney-like too. That Nordic comic is interesting, but the art and lack of size, and quality at times gives me a headache trying to figure out what I am looking at, but the artist too has a lot of potential, but needs more quality control. Those are the ones with a lot of potential and that I see here regularly usually.

Thanks for the feedback m8.
By lack of size, do you mean the resolution of the pages? I'm thinking of upping the size once I'm done with this chapter, but I'm not sure how big I should make the pages.

Not that anon but I pointed out other times that there is a values problem with the comic, the figures are hard to read against the background unless they're wearing bright colors.

The art itself is pretty good and I like the muted colors you choose, so you only need to work on your use of shadows and values to make things "pop". Have you read Framed Ink?
>>

>>
>>78829495
Ah, yeah, values is hard.
I haven't read Framed Ink, is it good?
>>
>>78828883

That anon here, reolution wise I think you could polish it up a little more, I wish the pages were bigger so I could really enjoy the art and characters. Quality wise, I think you could make the art a little less scratchy looking and try to blend the elements a little better. The problem is, its so small atm, its hard to tell. It feels very raw too, as if you were half 2/3 into the artistic process finishing the page and then just decided to post it.

But, I would say make a bigger size image , and work on that, I think that might be where your problem lies atm, working on too small of a canvas is hindering your artistic abilities.

>>78829495

The values could be improved, but as a stand alone image, its still pretty damn good, I would implore you to focus on resizing your images and work on a larger canvas, that, I think is going to solve some of the problems right off the bat.

They go clockwise from the top. The one on the left is the final. Bottom was an experiment since I ditched that drawing.

There are days where it's like I forgot half of what I learned, I end up redrawing the same hand 50 times, I check with mirrors, I change the pose, eventually I think it's good to ink and during the inking I realize it's terrible and I start over.

I even find that I screw up basic stuff like pressing too hard with the pencils while drawing. I'm also really forgetful and unfocused in general when it's that kind of period, I wonder if it's some sort of vitamin deficiency.

Poppy I like, but its not updating and at times it caters to fetishes a little too much, but I like that too, which I am torn against, I would give it about 5, 6 to 7/10, leaning more towards a 5.5/10. Its pretty damn enjoyable, but there feels to be some influence from Animal Crossing that turns me off. I think if Morbi drew out the drama and action it could be really good, but the recent dragon fight didnt leave me very impressed, her pacing too, is hit and miss, more miss than hit. It feels its trying to be proggessive too, almost tumblr-like and that really turns me off too. Still like it alot though, but it gives me a bittersweet taste when I read the bits that turn me off. Morbi should focus on story and character progression and leave this weird pussy footing filler pahes alone, it gets repetitive and boring at times.

The Sisters seems enjoyable, but, the colors and sharp edges of the designs make it a little hard too look at for too long. Everything feels very flat and 2-dimensional, I think if the artist added some more softer curves and elements to offset the harsh, sharp edges it would really blossom nicely. I feel there is some tumblr influence with the main girl, which makes me cringe at times, there needs to more facial expression ranges too, and more action, drama, it feels like its a little stagnant at times, the character feel very stiff too, I think if the artist really began to think about capturing the illusion of motion in a still frame would really kick the some of the stiff elements too. Panela and scene vartion is great, but pacing is very slow and monotonous.
>>
>>78829880
Yeah, that's my time management issues rearing their ugly head. Too much time not drawing makes me end up rushing everything to get it up "on time" (if I actually followed my schedule I'd spend about 14 hours per page after sketching, but I've been averaging 9.5 or something recently).

I work at four times the upload size, so I don't think that's my issue.

>story no idea what is going on other than crazy face, Annabeth, sexual stuff, or randomness, the comic doesn't know what it is or what it wants to be.

It's just a continuous story about kids who want to be heroes.

Slice of life (?) and action.

>tumblr influence
oh... opinion discarded

the character jam is literally a 14 year old girl, of course she reminds you of tumblr (a site populated by teenage girls.) also i realize now this is just your personal opinion not an objective standard so i'm not worried i wasn't mentioned. my comic wouldn't be your style. also i think it's like complaining about "filler" in western cartoons - action and drama need to be tempered with breathing room or else the reader would be exhausted.
>>
>>78831765
eh I don't think that's the one he meant. Jam is antitumblr. it's the big mannish one who's tumblry.. erin i believe.
but youve gotta understand that's just because she's ginger. gingers are LIKE that. the sisters is one of the most real-feeling thing i've ever seen given its 00s-cartoon art style influence. They look like total caricatures of real people

now it's possibly tumblr is into all that rosy-elbows-and-nose shit because gingers briefly became an oppressed minority in their culture (i think england had to do with that) but that's the only connection. If you've listened to the writer and artist of this comic talk, they're like... total down home bros. real serious real-life-experience tough guys. and considering one of them is a faggoo that's pretty impress.
>>
>>78823936
>Prequel and Poppy Opossum still seem to be generally liked as well
The Poppy threads became cesspools of furry fetishism, complaining about the comic and/or Morbi so Morbi stopped visiting the threads ages ago.

The first page of the test comic. So apparently Manga Studio's screentones look vastly different depending on how much zoomed or downscaled the image is. I will have to make sure it doesn't look like total shit, but that comes later, for now I want move on to another page at least for a bit.

Nobody cared before 2009.

No idea where you got that number. Artists have always drawn porn since the dawn of time, they always will.

The only reason I think it's worth doing is to keep the 'rating' PG or whatever it is. Personally I think it's insane that the human body would need to be censored when there's no sex involved, no matter the age you're targeting your work to. Even more ironic that violence is more accepted.

Another WIP.

I decided to use marker and gray scales... I hope I don't regret this.

I want to draw a magical girl comic where it feels like Jam project's Okkusanman and Makka na Chikai is playing in continuous loop in the background...

>>78833051
Man, I would have had them all the time if I can get away with it, but since I also do porn there is probably not reason to...
>>
>>78833932
exactly. the idea that images or written depictions of harmful things are harmful only works because people don't think about it at all. If they did, and still believed it, then logically they'd give up on existence as a failed experiment and try to kill everyone and everything. Or themselves or whatever. Because they're basically describing like one of those star trek episodes where anything you imagine becomes real and starts wreaking havoc. No wonder they try to destroy all imagination.. except the concept itself comes from their own imaginations running wild. makes you think. anyway we need to start hushing those people up the moment they start with their idiotness. they're just little kids pushing the boundaries and need a quick smack to shut them up
>>
>>78834138
ooh that looks cool
>>78834138
>Man, I would have had them all the time if I can get away with it, but since I also do porn there is probably not reason to...
ugh that stratification pisses me off, but I see it all the time (blaster nation and rock cocks come to mind). that's business I guess. It happens in all kinds of shit, remember when even a splash of comedy was seen as unwelcome in action, or vice versa? Even now you cant have any kind of religiony references in something unless it's a straight up religious product.
>>
>>78834114
I think you're projecting.
>>
>>78834283
dude it's not like this is a science, it's just an impression people got. for a while. It was briefly awkward around 2005-2010 when the internet was a lot more recognized as having individual identities for websites. This is about the time 4chan was actually mentioned on the news as a terrorist organization. Basically the idiots in charge of things were just barely aware-enough to recognize a name, if not what it meant or what it was... Just enough to worry about professional associations. That's over now though, pretty solidly.
>>
>>78834246

This anon gets it.
>>
>>78834246
Well, generally, I wanted to avoid needing to carry an "adult" label on my main comic projects, if I don't have to. Just being courteous to my host, mainly.
>>
>>78832197
I forgot it's 2016 but yeah it is different - it used to be some secret taboo thing and now it's just whatever, who cares, etc. plus /co/ is a pretty tame blue board for the most part. even back in 09 people would say /co/ is love, nicest place on 4chan, etc.
>>
>>78834355
I think that YOU got that impression because you were young and naive during 2005-10, and to a large extent you still are. But nothing's changed but you.
>>
>>78834465
the realities of life do tend to catch up to us, though a lot of them are illusory and WILL go away if ignored
>>
>>78834516
so you think there was never a time when it was important to avoid bad associations professionally? well i'd like to live in your head man because it sounds like things were great, instead of just now finally getting better
but either way that anon who thinks it's still a problem is incorrect
>>
>>78834550
I think artist doodling lewd drawings was never a "bad association."

I think you were probably sexually insecure over it, but again, real artists and professionals never were.

You've slowly outgrown that phase, which is normal, but you still fail to see the larger picture.
>>
>>78825451
I remember chatting with a somewhat "notorious" (in /co/ circles) artist about what he thought about the constant attacks and bitching he was getting on /co/.

He laughed and described all of 4chan as "profitless 12 year olds."

I think he had the right attitude.

Anon who told me to buy LED lights because they produce no heat: thanks. So many times I scolded myself on that stupid steel lamp I have in my round.

So this is page 19. The colors are awful as always because of the scanner.

I know it's shitty, but is it unacceptably shitty? Can I go on like this for a while until I get a new scanner?

I can't stand digital colors anymore, it's the most tedious thing in the universe and my computer is so slow.
>>
>>78835041
Really? I find digital coloring quite pleasant. Perhaps the software you're using is the issue?

Regardless, looks pretty OK - it's certainly readable enough to post.
>>
>>78835111
I'm so stupid slow at it. I don't 'close' my lines much so I have to outline all around the ink layer and then bucket fill it. And on top of being the most joyless drudgery, it also feels so sluggy, it might be my computer lagging with these huge files but I can't stand it.

If I paint in watercolor it's so much faster and I actually enjoy it. I might be able to output more (read = any) pages a week this way. The only thing that has put me off it is the weird rendering of the colors by my 11 year old scanner, panel 4 is mostly neutral colors and it looks like some '70s acid trip in the scan.

I might win an award for most inconsistent art style in a webcomic tho

>tumblr influences with the main girl.
Erin is getting pretty heavily played by a guy and she only really gets away with things because the only people in her life who scold her are Beatrice (who is a fuck-up) and Jam (who is super young). She's an alcoholic and she's kind of a bad person.

If you meant Beatrice, she's a stripper dating a bro-dude who makes a Ghost Adventures type show; and that's about all she has going for her. She's friends with a cop and a transwoman, but those are occupational hazards or from back in high school. She's also clearly fucked up on some level and it isn't portrayed as a good thing. Her narrative arc is how sort of shitty it is to be the one who told you so.

Jam's essentially a chav-nerd. She cusses a lot, she doesn't respect authorities (which would really just be Erin), and she's learned real quick that powers are more like a gun than a major fixer-upper ability. Which is sort of disillusioning. Her narrative for this arc is sort of realizing she can't rely on her family, and that's a hard hit for a young teen without a support network.

But I can see a lot of what you're saying. And yeah, it isn't for everyone. The pacing is a little slow, hazard of the first story arc; setting up the world so we can destroy it. But we've got to hit up a bit of slice of life in tone to make it work for the story. Sorry it doesn't vibe with you, anon.

>>78831829
>Real-feeling thing.
Thanks. We try, anon. It is nice you feel that way.

celtx. But that doesn't work for everyone. Depends on what format you like to script in.

Yes. Cast pages are crucial to dramatic webcomics with more than a few characters because people aren't reading your story in one sitting. It's easy to forget important things about characters, let alone minor things like character names. I use them when I go back to comics.

>>78836359

"Slow pacing" for a lot of people on /co/ just means that the comic, show, whatever, takes a strong interest in character, especially if there's scenes that aren't forwarding a plot, and is realistic - there's no ex-positional dumps about characters like an episode of Law and Order.

You're a writer, so one of your abnormalities - relative to normal people - is likely your interest in this kind of thing. Most people are only interested in other people of virtue and achievement, at best, and usually just those interesting people doing interesting things.

I've said it before, but I really like your comic specifically because it is realistic. (But I'm also abnormal.) If it were more invested in its action elements it'd just be another webcomic about magic and lore.
>>
>>78834614
man it sounds like you're projecting now. I personally never restricted myself whatsoever (I mean past when I was a kid and I giggled if someone made a swear) but I also didnt share my art anywhere really. The beginning of my internet time i knew all things were accepted and there were no limits (About 2000-2005), but after that things changed a bit for a while. it's only just slowly gradually changing back
