I loved Flapjack I thought it was a great show. Granted I am a sucker for sea/maritime setting. Its somewhat dark humor really appealed to me.

Flapjack was a unique artstyle at the time. Plus it combined the cool ocean effect and the stop motion scenes. The shows that stemmed from it just ripped off the artstyle.

Not OP the show is great and still very much disgusting. Apart from Flapjack most of the characters were ugly looking and disfigured which really did fit the atmosphere and tone of the show. It's a great kids show with and ugly and dirty setting.

It's so weird seeing so many currently-popular stylistic touches (the little things that basically made up the Adventure Time style that many artists have copied) used in a way that's so full of old experimental glee and energy in Flapjack. And then it has so many other little oddball touches like the mixed-media elements, so you're never quite sure what to expect from it. All-around fun cartoon.

It's just funny to think that so many tumblr cartoons came from a show that wouldn't get as much attention as future cartoons.
Flapjack was a masterpiece
it was mature in a way that wasn't just lowbrow violent or suggestive
it had wit and a distinct sense of dark humour
the visual style followed perfectly in line with that tone often being ornate even grotesque

Chowder and Flapjack definitely feel like the early ones at the party for the current climate of cartoons. I wish I was able to better articulate why they have that impression, though.
At least with Flapjack you can point to a lot of major players in the industry who worked on the show (Ward, Hirsch, Quintel, I guess Van Orman?)
