He's a father figure.
Voice actor tells the story that he based the voice on his older brother after he got back from Vietnam. The brother left a typical young man but when he got back he was much more mature and responsible and commanding. When the VA got the audition and learned that Optimus Prime would be a leader type, and that it was a cartoon for young boys, he channeled what he had thought of his brother.
Because of that, all the little boys with absentee fathers bonded to him and looked up to him as a role model. It's the one common thing that the VA hears every time he talks to his fans.
