Last weeks numbers were record lows for the shortened lineup, this week was better but not much to talk about. AgK and Parasyte had great retention between each other but AgK was pretty down from normal. The end of the block took a hit, but still up from last week. An ok start for Champloo though.

It really feels like the whole show takes place in some sort of edgy RP server in an MMO with permadeath. Constant tone breaking comedy during downtime, constant death with backstory only kicking in just beforehand, actually entertaining/good characters are squandered and die, video game lingo used by multiple characters without batting an eye, fixation on the term "trump card" as if it were a game mechanic, terms that sound like they came from an obscure JRPG ("danger beast" and "imperial arms"), insanely stupid powers that have vague limits and abilities and don't make a ton of sense (I will never not think "Sniper rifle that's stronger when you're in danger" isn't the dumbest shit in the world), literal "nuh-uh that didn't kill me" moments, generic as fuck MC with shit taste in women, etc. Then of course you have ERPers like those brothel guys from that episode's first scene (remember when Tatsumi and Leone raided that place and out of nowhere Leone said "That girl he was just beating up as we got here is one of my best friends" out of nowhere?) and the fat black clown in the manga that rapes pyro's family.
Thinking back on everything I've seen, I think this may just be the worst-written piece of fiction I've ever seen in my life. Pretty impressive, to be honest.

I was under the impression that its major draw is in being literally the only channel in North America to air anime that's not kiddie shit. I, for one, don't really give a rat's ass about the packaging.
Keep in mind that while most of us here on the chan know where to get animu, and we can always browse /a/'s catalog if we're not sure what to watch, most people are not that sophisticated. To them, they're just animated shows with a different styling, and *maybe* if they're paying attention they'll notice that many of them are set in Japan. These are the people /a/ is talking about when they say "plebs".
On the flip side, that's also kinda what makes Toonami important. It's really one of the few gateways for non-weebs to get into anime. Given the state of the industry, such as it is, we really can't afford to lose it a second time.

They'll never cancel One Piece because the license is really inexpensive when you consider that it basically supplies them with infinity episodes.
Rather than negotiate a new contract every few months, OP will reliably provide content for years to come. If OP were cancelled tomorrow in Japan, Toonami would still have enough episodes to last into the next decade.
Ultimately a long-running show with a loyal fanbase that gets good-but-not-great numbers is worth more than a new show whose potential numbers are unknown. Especially since most other anime would just need to be replaced in three to six months.
Plus, I doubt most rights-holders are willing to let their brand new shows air as late as 2:30 AM. Champloo's slot is probably the latest they can afford to air new acquisitions. And if they can't find anything to program at 2:30, they'll probably lose three as well.
