The end. No one cares about old school Swampy goodness 'cept me I guess
>>
>>78724025

Oh shit, that fucking book.
>>
>>78724149
i mean len wein hasn't written a good comic in a long time but the kelley jones art is always great. still its kind of a slog to read because there's narration boxes all over the damn pages. let the art breathe for once
>>
>>78724256
It was pretty good pleb.
Old school.
>>
>>78724256
For me it added to the bronze age horror; pre-Alan Moore Swamp Thing feel of the book so I enjoyed it quite a bit
>>
The coloring really brings down the art.
>>
>>78724256
The old school narration style was great, Len clearly is going for a vibe that harkens back to Alan Moore's tenure on the book when it was all about horror atmosphere. Going by the issue, this is going to be great, short lived horror book in the vein of Swampy's golden days.
>>
>>78724476
>Len clearly is going for a vibe that harkens back to Alan Moore's tenure on the book

You cunt.

>The Gator is named Albert
Goddammit Alec
>>
>>78724476
if only he had the prose or writing technique of Moore to match.
If we keep giving guys like wein a free pass, then it means shit like batman odyssey gets published because we would give neal adams a free pass. etc. Mind you this is nowhere near as bad as that, but it's such an okay comic when one would expect more from wein
>>
>>78724588
>moore
This is Len Wein.
Wein.

He's trying to ape himself.
>>
>>78724588
They made it clear from the start this is a nostalgia mini for older readers.
>>
>>78724149
This was pretty much what I wanted this book to be. Thanks OP.
>>
>>78724588
>then it means shit like batman odyssey gets published because we would give neal adams a free pass

You say that like it's a bad thing
>>
>>78724588
>one would expect more from wein
Based on what?
>>
>>78724821
it was one hell of a horrible crazy ride
>>
>>78724969
Well, not based on his original Swamp Thing, since everyone seems to be obsessed with name checking Moore in this thread.
>>
>>78724149
weren't these mini series designed to bring new life into the characters, this reads and feels like a old school swamp thing comic. No wonder DC sales have been so terrible, Didio keeps doing shit like this.
>>
>>78723932

>>
>>78725059
No, this was suppose to be an old school story, fuck sakes it has Wein writing it
>>
>>78725059
It's fucking Wein.
The original co-fucking-creator.
What did yo expect?
>>
>>78725059
>weren't these mini series designed to bring new life into the characters,
We already had a contemporary Swamp Thing by Snyder and Soule.
>No wonder DC sales have been so terrible, Didio keeps doing shit like this.
DCYou was a very strong sales lesson in why it's a mistake to go all out in a lidewine attempt to chase new readers. This is one of the bones they're throwing to older fans.
>>
>>78725004
Even Len Wein admits his original runs on the Swamp Thing were pretty bland and he was bored writing the character until Alan Moore blew his mind with the material he delivered on the book.
>>
>>78725187
>Len Wein admits his original runs on the Swamp Thing were pretty bland
then Wein has shit taste
>>
>>78725202
it was just a Monster story man, Moore gave a lot of depth to the character
>>
>>78725625
>it was just a Monster story man
Nothing wrong with my man
>>
>>78725654
Well, you have a point, it was interesting and scary like hell at times

Swamp Thing 001 (2016) (digital) (Oroboros-DCP)

>>
>>78723846

Aww I thought it was new on going
>>
So before I read this does it happen after what Soule wrote or is Len ignoring everything pre Moore to just write and old school story?
>>
>>78742934
Ignoring everything I assume. No mention of anything from the last ongoing but it is set in modern times (kids using tablets and such)
>>
>>78742934
It's meant to take place after Soule but Wein is basically ignoring everything because this version of Swamp Thing speaks like the Wein/Moore thing with the constant pauses, something Snyder's and Soule's version explicitly didn't to differentiate him from the Moore thing.

It doesn't necessarily contradict anything New 52 beyond that bit of characterisation but it might as well be an out of continuity story. Especially when Soule's run has a definitive and satisfying sense of closure.

Thank, OP.

How much of this is "swamp horror" and how much is just regular horror?
>>
>>78724128
>Panel 4
Swampy ain't got time for leg day
>>
>>78745755

First half is moody swamp stuff the second half switches for more traditional horror. Hard to tell which one will have more emphasis, I suppose it depends whether or not the zombie thing is the entire main dish or just a stepping stone to the bigger plot.
>>
Thank you, OP, for the story time.

Gotta say though, didn't care for this much at all. The writing was bad, and the art was fine but some of the expressions and reactions just didn't make sense within the context.

Is this what Swamp Thing was like before Alan Moore?
>>
Is the nu52 run canon to this or does it take place in some weird Convergence bubble universe?
Also calling it the kids parents are lying and probably the ones who did it to him.
>>
>>78750483
Pretty much. :^)
Albeit no earth god powers, he just hit stuff hard and could regenerate.
>>
>>78751703
it could take place after soule, it's supposed to be a mini you can read without much prior knowledge

>No one cares about old school Swampy goodness 'cept me I guess
You're breaking my heart, anon. I'm always a proponent for the Wein/Wrightson Swampy when most are just recommending the Moore run.
>>
>>78723846
man, i wanted to like this so much...but it was just bad. badly written and badly drawn/inked/colored. i get some of you guys are tripping on nostalgia here, but you gotta call out when something is awful, like Before Watchmen and the new Dark Knight Returns series. if we never demand better comics, we'll probably never get them. just saying.
>>
>>78760198
And we also have to call something out when it's being completely blown out of proportion.
Like your pos.
>>
>>78725004
Nothing against Wein, but his writing in ST´s run was just average, a bunch of harmless gothic tales you could find in any horror comic-book in its time, they were entertaining but nothing else by their own, if anybody remembers that run was for Wrightson´s crazy art, the real reason it was regarded as a classic.
>>
>>78760255
my hyperbole matches my disappointment, i guess. btw, is it such a bad position to demand better written and drawn comics? i won't apologize for not liking mediocre stuff.
>>
>>78760198
>Kelley Jones
>badly drawn

Well fuck you body. I agree that digital coloring doesn't really work with his art but you're otherwise wrong.
>>
>>78760793
Jones is a poor version of Sam Keith. while i admire his sense of grotesque proportions, he doesn't keep it consistent. some panels here are just all out of whack with the horror aesthetic and seem almost comical (pun intended).
>>
>>78723846
Good stuff. Real solid return to the 70's horror roots.

The digital coloring doesn't mesh with the style particularly well but the colors are pretty on point.

His writing was fine. The fuck does everyone need Swamp Thing to be this H.P. Lovecraft rip-off that Moore turned it into? What's wrong with just writing normal horror stories? Those were always the best parts of Moore's run anyway.
>>
>>78750483
70s Swamp Thing had the best art ever of any series in history.
>>
>>78760198
>the new Dark Knight Returns series

Which is rock solid.
>>
>>78760198

I thought it was mediocre. Its only 6 issues so I'll read it to see how it goes.
>>
That was actually pretty decent. Only weak part was the dialogue, which wasn't even THAT bad.
