Literally when? If anything, he began getting more exposure AFTER this book.
Steve Orlando said a lot of times in interviews that he doesn't like how gay characters in comics are usually seen as just another half of a pairing, like Midnighter/Apollo or Hulkling/Wiccan. He likes these characters as individuals and wanted to make a solo Midnighter book to flesh him out outside of his relationship. No big DC conspiracy behind it, just a writer who had a specific vision for the book he got.
