He's a fucking macho god of war compared to earlier Disney cartoon male sidekicks. He at least gets some hits in, can fight competently with an actual martial arts style and isn't completely-overshadowed by the female heroine, which is far more than can be said for the parade of pussy shits that were his spiritual predecessors. You want insufferable faggotry, try growing up with male sidekick/secondary main characters whose entire contribution to the show was "being terrified of everything and flailing wildly at danger to no positive effect". Just to top it all off, he's a normally-masculine, combat-capable male character in an era of cartoons where the "women are #1, all men are misogynist scum" message is playing on full-blast, too.
Try comparing him to Steven from SU, a central male character who can't throw a punch against anything or even smash shit with his unbreakable energy shield powers, and instead has to be saved by literally everyone else, from his adoptive alien soldier mothers, to his shoehorned love interest, to his deadbeat beach bum father. Not only that, but he actually has his only hope of getting a weapon and learning to actually fight aliens taken away as soon as it appears, shoved into the hands of his shoehorned "normal girl" love interest by shitty writing. Poor bastard's own bloodline weapon wielded by his own mother in an interstellar civil war, given to and used by some random girl who's no more significant than any other random person who lives nearby, save for vaguely knowing him as a friend. Closest he'll ever come to picking up and attacking with a blade is the obvious final battle the show is building up to, and even then he'll almost-certainly be fused with the love interest into a tranny abomination whose personality will likely be hers in a fight, not his.

It helps that for the most part, the monsters were a joke in the early episodes.
We knew they were competent fighters, but the focus was never on A fight. Monster attacks just happened, like Random Encounters. Hell, one episode was basically a flashback explaining a monster attack in the middle OF the monster attack.
