I realize that, over the last couple years, 4chan has turned comically conservative, primarily as a reaction towards tumblr, but the thing is, the rest of the world hasn't. A sys admin isn't going to spend a lot of time face to face with people, and certainly won't be representing the company in a situation where the people they're talking to will see them, so looking like your friend does is fine, especially if she turns out to be a hard worker.
My uncle was the head of a hotel district's IT, and he basically got that high up because his boss knew next to nothing and was impressed whenever he solved the smallest problems. So, despite doing next to nothing, he kept up appearances to get to a great position. It got to the point where, when the specific hotel he worked in began liquidation, he was offered the chance to just live there for his salary and make sure nobody looted it while it was closed. That went on for about a year, giving him plenty of time to continue his career elsewhere and providing the cushiest job possible, all for looking valuable.
People that make life-changing decisions that mainly show insecurity obviously have to try a lot harder to look valuable.
