Hellboy did a good job with this sort of thing. Makeup with CGI wings and tails in nessecary shots would look pretty well.

hellboy had to make some major concessions though. Having tiny goat legs is not a HUGE part of hellboy to me, but I'm not a fan. maybe it was to the fans.
In any case, while I ADORE the practical effects in the hellboy movies, I think they have limits. For example, putting ron perlman on wires so that when he's punched he can go flying through the air... slowly.. at a perfectly straight diagonal line..

I despise it. I love practical effects, but when it comes to kinetic stuff you NEED to use real physics. Putting things on wires is the equivalent of using floaty terrible CGI.
What you need to do is either make a realistic lifesized doll and hit it for real, or make the doll and put motion capture balls on it so that you can capture the REAL physics and then modify it a bit for what a person would do while flying through the air.
