I think maybe part of the issue is that given we're on the internet and it's difficult to gauge the level of familiarity someone has with a subject (even more so with anon), the default approach people have is simply to assume that everyone they talk to is at least familiar with the basics of the subject under discussion, and if you don't have that familiarity you are expected to do your own research beforehand. "lurk more", etc. It's not very nice, of course, but it's more time effective than individually teaching people, given the huge numbers of people learning things on the internet every day.
