i'm new at this comics thing /co/, but I like what i have bought so far (being just the five Saga volumes) so I'm willing to delve deeper

Do you guys have a "essential /co/ list" or something?

What are your thoughts on Low? I'm considering checking it out.

You might have a case of the terminal shit tastes
>>
>>78634119
read Kingdom Come
>>
I like Low and Saga have you tried The Sandman?
>>
Don't read Sandman it has terrible artwork.
>>
>>78634259
I'll look at Sandman.

Half-Century War/In Hell/Cataclysm/ and Rulers of Earth are all great

What the hell is bad about Saga? The setting is crazy weird andawesome and the characters are loveable.
>>
>>78634504

Wtf, I just told NOT to look at it!
>>
>>78634691
There's nothing wrong, it's just entry-level and pretty much normalfag tier.
>>
>>78634730
>normalfag tier

fuck off

>>78634691
Nothing wrong, CBR had Saga be #1 of their top 100 list for year 2015. Comic is awesome.
>>
Mignolaverse
>>
>>78634730
OP here. Name something that isn't entry-level. I'm genuinly interested in getting into this shit, so if there is something much better out there than Saga 8which i already think is cool) I'm pretty hyped about it
>>
>>78634730
Do you know anything similar that doest the same things better but isn't any of those?

>>78634691
That's the problem it was basically written with everyone in mind so that no one could argue with the motivations of the main characters
Of course you're going to root for the star crossed lovers and their baby and of course you want to cheer for the rogue with a heart of gold who saves children from being sex slaves

There's nothing wrong with this but its something so simple and is lauded as being great and fresh and new when its the same as we've always had

Anyone got some recommendations for a mangafag? I know people usually take out the Usagi Yojimbo or Ronin card but I don't really read the typical samurai or shounen manga. My favorite titles are things like pic related. Also, Nausicaa and Alita.

I have read The Maxx because I liked the animated series. I read Mignola, Graham, Moebius, Sandoval and Bilal and liked their works. Also liked Transmetropolitan, Sandman, Saga and Low
>>
>>78634772
>>78634821

No, see, if you are new to comics. You pretty much WANT entry-level.

Once you develop a more specific taste (for example, you decide that you like the sci fi aspect of saga and want more, or that you hated the fact that it was character driven and what more plot heavy comics) you can search for similar comics.
>>
>>78634834
I like it more for it's creative setting. It's basically, you rarely see such weird and original worlds. Makes me think of Bas-lag, Morrowind or Oddowrld.
>>
>>78634943
I liked this:>>78634956
The only thing I didn't like or rather thought wasn't anything great would be the art. The designs of the creatures were cool but the art style and coloring themselves fealt much less interesting.

>>78634929
If you're a weeb Wayward is for you and is also pretty good it's all about weird old Japanese gods fucking around

>>78634956
The setting isn't even that creative as it is in space with the background of "two empires at war"
The story could be set in any historical period and be the exact same with nothing changed "IN SPACE" was used though because space is cool though

>>78634929

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin is a beautiful remaster of the original Gundam series. The original artist even fills in the original story with all the things that they couldn't put in the show from 1979 due to shitty deals with toy companies and time/money.
Vertical have published them in english recently in huge volumes that are some of the best hardback comics that i own.

if you don't know anything about Gundam, it is both a complicated political thriller about ideologies and a classic hero's journey (but with two protagonists, one from each side in the war).

I really really like these.
>>
>>78635035
I just realised that i read his post wrong, my mistake for this post
>>
>>78634943
oh . . then what are some good entry level comics?
>>
>>78634956
>I like it more for it's creative setting

Too bad it barely does anything with the setting.
>>
>>78635131
Usually the things that are being sold the most are bought by entry level readers

Do you have any film genres you like?
>>
>>78635224
sci fi and horror movies, mostly

also like historical war dramas
>>
>>78634129
Fuck off.
>>
>>78634929
Tangentially related to this, but what are some good sci-fi/space opera comics comparable to Legend of Galatic Heroes? Almost done watching the series and I definitely want to continue my space opera high thankfully the original novels are finally getting released in English, but a lot of books I check out usually have heavy fantasy elements, while I want more "classical" political sci-fi.

Atomic Robo is a sort of sci-fi comedy adventure that a lot of people like (including myself)

East of West is a good combination of Sci-fi/political thriller/western genres

>>
>>78635020
That's like saying Bas-lag isn't creative because it's basically about an evil industrial empire. You can trivialize anything and avoid talking about the elements that put your argument down the toilet.
>>
>>78635242
There's a book currently about the Revolutionary War, called Rebels.
>>
>>78635020
That's why I used the word "mangafag" instead of "weeb". I'm not interested in Japan or japanese culture specifically. I just like their animation and comic books, but even then I usually like the one that's less typical and often considered "hipster"/ The only manga on that list that has some very typical japanese elements would be xxxHolic, but I liked that manga more for the style, the female protagonist and how it filtered mythology through a modern setting (but more just for Yuuko).

So hearing that some comic book is about japanese gods doesn't do anything to me.
>>78635034
Yes.
>>78635035
I watched four gundams: 0079, Zeta, 08th and Turn A. Liked the last one the most. In general I'm not a fan, when it comes to mecha I still like Gainax shows and Evangelion the most. When it comes to sci-fi I prefer post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk or near future setting rather than "realistic" space operas. I also prefer more personal stories than ones about politics.
>>78635309
I don't really like it myself. But you can check out other space operas which are heavy on politics, most are mecha: Gundam, Yamato and Votoms. If it doesn't have to be space then also Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed.
>>
>>78635390
You're right it isn't that interesting the interesting bit is the characters driven drama which is the best thing Saga has going for it
A story needs more than just a cool setting for it to be any good and I'm sure that Bas-lag's setting is the least interesting thing in the story

Drop everything and start reading Usagi Yojimbo.

No, seriously, drop EVERYTHING you're doing right now and read it. I was postponing it for years and only recently got to finally read it and it's the most mindblowingly great comic I've ever held in my hands. It hasn't got one bad issue. NOT ONE. FOR 30 YEARS. There is a 22 page story about nothing else than making tea and yet it still manages to blow your mind.

Go read it NOW. You will thank me some other time.

Kirkmans invincible is the most underrated comic. Ottley draws great action an violent fights. Kinda like if the justice league existed in the DBZ universe with sayians taking over planets and trying not to rule the Galaxy. It's all continuous and builds really well
>>
>>78642131
Invincible is great for the first 80 or so issues but is almost not worth following now. Trying to read it month to month (or whenever Kirkman gets off his ass) is a pain and Kirkman has clearly lost his direction and is just grabbing onto ideas and getting bored of them in a few issues
>>
It's is a little slow sometimes, but kirkman is able to slowly lay storylines an build them overtime since he doesn't have to worry about being rotated off the title like at marvel an DC. He can properly build a story from beginning to end. He's been building up the viltimite leader rebuilding an army for awhile now. It's also interesting how it directly mocks a lot of the common comic storyline, an marketing tecniques. His commentary on comics is perfect. In one issue the main character goes into his comic shop an says he hasn't read science dog (his favorite title) in over a year. Opens the issue an says, damn science dogs a girl now?
>>
>>78636015
> telling a new reader to read Requiem

and then anon never read another comic again.
