Depends. There are some things to consider.
Males nowadays are viewed as impure, we're "nasty", "predators", violent and our relationships are pretty focused on sexuality. That means most writers will not put m/m on a show for a young audience.
Then there's the fact that lesbians turn both men and women on, so male writers (i.e. the majority) will be more appealed to write those types of homosexual relationships.
Lastly most males are extremely insecure about their masculinity, so they avoid a lot of things to not break their illusion. Showing emotions, wearing certain clothes and so on.

I think the cast has pretty great chemistry, especially if you watch their interviews and stuff, but most of them get far too little screentime for us to see much in terms of character relationships. Part of that is because the format aka blockbuster summer movie is not as well suited for such things as a TV series is, though the other part is certainly failure of writing.
The approach TOS had to slash, especially Kirk/Spock variety, became much more relaxed as time went by. Roddenberry went from giving statements of "I created them and they are NOT gay" to creating extra special word to express that Spock and Kirk are "brothers, friends and/or lovers".
I think nuTrek did aim to keep the Kirk&Spock gay vibes from the start, what with their script having things like "Their eyes meet the first time. It is as if time stops." However, because Trek is a weird future where no homosexuality happens EVER (unless you are an evil lesbian), there was a need to somehow establish NO HOMO, which they did by hooking Spock and Uhura up.
Not sure how well that worked though, since comparing Spock with Uhura to Spock with Kirk just kinda makes it all the more gay.

While there are those characters, whose homosexuality is very much shoehorned in, there are also very valid side characrters whose sexuality is casually brought up. I would say the Police Chief from Flash is one; he mentions his boyfriend/fiance/husband occationally in conversations, which is something a lot of people tend to do. People in relationships tend to make casual references to their significant other, simply because that person is very central element in their everyday life.
