When you get your hair braided, your hair is pulled from the very root and woven in tightly with the synthetic hair. There's a lot of tension directly on your scalp which causes headaches. I usually have to sleep on my stomach the first few days afterwards because it's so uncomfortable.

Because once you get past the initial pain, you don't really have to deal with your hair for another six weeks or so. And they do look very nice once they're done. I could get a relaxer and chemically straighten my hair but when I was ten, that made almost all my hair fall out. And my office unofficially frowns upon afros, although there's nothing technically in the rules about it. I used to just wear my hair like that at my old job. Shit sucks but those are the options.

Writers don't like wives or kids because it means the character has to spend half their time looking after them whereas if it's "just" a girlfriend they can ignore them for multiple arcs (or even forget them entirely such as with Cowgirl and Hal Jordan).
Editors don't like wives and kids because they feel it ages the characters too much and it doesn't appeal to their pathetic attempts to vicariously hold on to their youth I mean it doesn't appeal to the edgy teenagers that they are convinced buy comics.
