Here are the boxoffices of the animated movies released in the US and Canada in 2015, showing US/Can numbers and numbers for elsewhere for total worldwide numbers. All my numbers came from Box Office Mojo. If numbers were missing I put in a question mark. I found numbers for 22 movies, but I know of 10 other movies that also got US/Can releases but Box Office Mojo has no numbers for.
I marked with asterisks the movies that are still in theaters, and so haven't reached final numbers yet. The number for "Anomalisa" is for just one day of release.

>As of December 31, 2015, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip has grossed $55.6 million in North America and $8.5 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $64.1 million, against a budget of $90 million.[6]

>Going up against Force Awakens was a mercy killing so that Alvin can be relegated to a more accepting tv franchise
Decent theory...SHI-SHAAH!

>Dino Time came out in theatres

I have to admit a bias that I leave out live action movies that have CGI characters in them. Like "Alvin" and "Paddington" and "Star Wars: TFA".

Probably just a Minions Cinematic Universe

And here are some numbers of 2014 movies that didn't have final numbers until 2015. They either were wide releases that were still in theaters, limited releases that got nominal releases in 2014 and larger releases in 2015, or limited releases that for some reason didn't report their numbers until late in 2015.

Yeah. And I actually saw a theatrical trailer of it. But for some reason it got yanked out of its original release. It finally got a very nominal US release in 2015, with a new name of "Back to the Jurassic" to tie it to some other movie. DirecTV pay per view also showed the movie.

One for each Minion.

I honestly would not mind if each villain got his or her own movie. Scarlett Overkill and villain-con were the best things from the movie.
