When it comes to the simpsons I like to think of it as sort of Marvel continuity. Think about how many Christmas episodes the show has had, (really any sitcom has had) and how no time has passed. Thus there are multiple simpsons 'universes' with unifying episodes that tie them all together (Santa's Little Helper episode, Armin Tamzarian, ect) that have shared continuity. Honestly whenever I get a real free weekend where I have nothing better to do, I'd love to make a canon map to try and figure it out.
