It can form an illusion of being gold and blue, or gold and white, or what the fuck ever for some people, just like a swirly image can form an illusion of movement. But the dress isn't objectively gold and blue, and the swirl isn't objectively moving. The dress is blue and black, and the swirl is still.

I think it's just that some people are more used to pictures where white in a shadow can look blueish so their brains corrected it for them while other people are more used to shitty cell phone cameras that wash colors out so their brains didn't do anything and they saw it for what it was.
The best I can get is blue/brown though. I never saw white/gold.

Yeah the first time I saw the image and didn't look at the background, I saw it as severly underlit white-gold too. But as soon as you notice from the background that the image is actually very overlit and has a yellowish hue, it's blue-black, and now I always only see it as blue-black.

People can see the blue as white if they're used to seeing shitty phone pictures with a fucked up white balance, where the image is underlit and has a blueish hue (kinda common), leading whites to look slightly blueish. So they slap that viewing experience filter to this image as well, mistakenly, and don't look at the background which makes it obvious that instead of being underlit with a blue hue, which would make the white appear blue, it's overlit with a yellow hue, which makes the black appear brown/gold.
Their brains are colour correcting it to the wrong direction based on their previous phone pic experiences, in a way

The white comes from a video if I remember correctly. when the dress was moved into/out of shitty lighting, it would change to white and gold.

Local vs relative light, anon. If you took a photo of a white shirt illuminated by a standard incandescent lightbulb, the colour picker would tell you it's yellow, maybe orange or even a dark shade of green, but there wouldn't be a single pixel indicating it being white. Our brains just happen to be smart enough to compensate.This is also a significant factor in why many beginning artists struggle to perceive or use colour accurately

Easy, the bolero looks like it was made of that very shimmery, almost metallic type of satin. A white dress of that material would look slightly bluish in an environment with a lot of blue diffuse light, like white light on blue wallpaper or simply a cloudless sunny day.
The first time I saw that photo I saw it as white and gold too, because the thumbnail made it seem like a horribly overexposed photo taken outside on something like a market, just with completely fucked white balance.
