While I still think it was wrong of them to prioritise race over talent, here's hoping this guy does a good enough job that it doesn't matter anyway.

This makes me really happy. There's a lot of heart and soul put into Creed and Fruitvale Station, and both are very well made. I'm very excited to see what he does with this property.

It's astounding that this guy is only 29 and has made two of the best films of this decade so far. Gives me high hopes for Black Panther.

The only directors Marvel has hired that actually had talent before this was Shane Black. The others are either writers who aren't nearly as good at directing or studio people who have little sense of identity in their films. Just because they're getting better people this time doesn't mean they've got a better track record.

DC on the other hand has hired over the years Christopher Nolan, Tim Burton, David Ayer, Wes Craven, and Patty Jenkins. Sure they decided to give Zack Snyder the keys to the kingdom, but that's only one strike against them.
>>

>>

He had plenty of control. He was also contracted to make a film under 2 and a half hours. He poorly planned and shot more scenes than he needed.

If anything Marvel gave him TOO MUCH freedom. They had more control over the first Avengers and it was a much better film.

Tho I liked AoU.

I'm pretty sure she just went to that meeting so she could turn it down and everyone would be like "Oh, look how above it all she is, so principled"

It's really like a pathology for female filmmakers, because you had that big brouhaha a while back where they complained that Colin Trevorrow got to direct Jurassic World and Star Wars despite being a nobody, and that no female indie filmmaker would get a chance like that. So they asked a whole bunch of these female filmmakers, known and unknown, whether they would direct sci-fi/fantasy genre stuff and the vast majority of them went "Oh no, that's just shit for manchildren and the Chinese, we want studios to give us serious Oscar fare only"

Because it gets clicks and ratings. Racism makes people like Al Sharpton a lot of money, so they pretend like everything is a race issue to perpetuate it.

Yeah, but now we get to check off the "Marvel's First Majority-Black Film" and "Marvel's First Film Directed By a Black Person" boxes.

Coogler, that's a fun name.

Taylor, Favreau, Whedon and Wright all walked away from the studio because of how little control they had over the movies. Favreau even made a movie about how much it sucked.

The sad part is that in the 90's people didn't seem to have a problem with minorities being the lead in huge movies. Zorro, Independence Day, MIB etc. But once the international market became stronger all of the prejudices of the foreign markets began effecting bottom lines and eventually even western mindsets. >>
>>78562714
>>but bu bu dc had a good reason!

sure thing D.Cuck.
>>
>>78562650
Basically they wanted to capitalize in Loki's popularity and the "style" of Avengers, causing the director, Patty Jenkins, to walk out and be replaced by a stooge TV director and greatly reducing the role of Malekith, which caused Mads Milkkelsen who they had lined up for the role to fuck off too.

Sure thing.

A fucking Talking Lion for Diana aint exactly a good decision
>>
>>78562709
I liked the story of Blade 2 and personal opinions on what epic means. I think as a trilogy it did its job. I dont think the same for Black Panther. Im excepting a safe as fuck movie and tons of compliants about Marvel breathing down Coolger's neck.

Would have been cool to see on the big screen desu senpai

goddammit wb
>>

I'd be inclined to agree with you had MacLaren not tried to put a talking battle tiger as a best friend for Diana in the movie.

It would be great, just not with Wonder Woman.

Honestly outside of the Kylo Ren change and removing Chewie outright the Chinese poster is better. It feels like less of a clusterfuck.
>>
>>78562791
Maybe for the Shazam movie. I got no problems with Wonder Woman talking to animals, it's one of her super powers, but having a talking lion sidekick is fucking dumb.

Now that i think about it, do you think that this is why they said no ? it would make some sense

No respected big named Black director is gonna go to Marvel. Look how quick Selma's director said no. They know what Marvel is doing and why. They arent gonna be a token to be paraded around.

Ryan is there is to just be the Black Director for a Black Super Hero Film in name only. He'll get in line like the rest before him.

That's more a sign of poor taste than anything.

Blade 3 was awful and Blade 2 was bogged down by poor cgi, poor story and and poor one liners and quips "can you blush" x2 cringe.

I expect Marvel will.... once again, make an amazing film.

>>

Not him, but directors are bound by distributors like that?
>>
>>78562927

No wonder no one wants to direct it. It's probably prequel-levels of shit..
>>
>>78562746

Creed was Fruitvale was Weinstein
>>
>>78563009
No, but director's like to stick with a certain studio if they're being treated well and studios like to keep directors around if they're popular and bringing in positive buzz.
>>
>>78563009
No, but often studios cultivate relationships with directors and actors like that, funding movies the artists want to do in exchange for getting them on commercial projects later on. There were several articles on film sites recently that said Universal funded Angelina Jolie's terrible bomb "By the Sea" because they wanted to keep their relationship with her and hopefully get her to star in a Bride of Frankenstein remake. Similarly why WB went along with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney's terrible "Our Brand is Crisis" because they want both of those actors to stay in their fold.

In some cases, pretty rare ones, yeah, the directors can sign exclusive contracts to studios.
>>
>>78560918
>Marvel actually got him
That's great
>>
>>78561819
Yeah, I read that NYT article too. Such self-serving bullshit about how Hollywood used to have great roles and films about women until Jaws and Ghostbusters made them abandon women and turn to the teenage boys audience.

These people all want to be Steven Spielberg, but they also want to skip the Jaws/ET/Close Encounters year and jump straight to the The Color Purple/Schindler's List era.
>>
>>78563108
So if George Miller wanted another Mad Max movie, he would have to do what WB wanted him to do like direct a DC or another Happy Feet movie just to keep him in a relationship?
>>
>>78563182
>how Hollywood used to have great roles and films about women until Jaws and Ghostbusters made them abandon women and turn to the teenage boys audience

???
>>
>>78563210
It probably depends on the stature of the director. Angelina Jolie's a famous actress but a shit director, so they swallow the cost of her shit directing to cash in later on what they can make from her acting.

People like George Miller and Nolan have enough stature that they can probably do the projects they want and studios will go along with it.
>>
>>78563210
They're already letting him make another Mad Max because Fury Road got such high praise. Plus, he's old and doesn't direct many movies anymore.
>>
>>78563210
Especially in Miller's case there's a good chance Fury Road could be nominated for Best Picture and a whole bunch of other Oscars this year, so he can probably do whatever he wants.

Coogler directing is pretty much a guarantee seeing as this is their 2nd round of talks.

The talent Marvel has acquired for phase 3 is pretty impressive.

How much could they even ask for?

Fant4shit is a dogshit franchise under Fox but apparently they know that in Marvels hands it's a billion dollar franchise. If they sell that I can't see them being able to get away with more than 500 million for F4.

As for Mutants.... DoFP was the only one to gross more than 460 million ww and while it made over 700 million the profits were pretty small (less than 100 million I think.).

Disney paid 4 billion for all of Lucas films, I don't see X-men right being sold for much more than 1 billion. And this is not taking into account if future flicks in the franchise do poor at the box-office, which could drive the price down..

It's about as believable as yet another rumor that a Black Director of a recent popular film also starring black people is going to direct a movie about a black superhero, which has happened literally 3 times now, First with Selma, then with Straight Outta Compton, Now this.

>>78563782
He's made 2 good movies in a row, one a biographical drama and another a spinoff of a popular series. It shows range as a storyteller that will always look good on a resume.

Fox knows the price tag is depreciating with every installment of either IP, but they know best of everyone that the cinema cape craze will dry out eventually, and when it does, then they'll negotiate, but for now? This is to make sure Disney doesn't have complete dominance over the Summer blockbuster scene, even if it means taking a loss themselves.

It annoys me how alot of critics refused to give Peyton Reed credit because muh Edgar Wright.

Wright fucked about, took forever, and walked out over inclusion of Peggy Carter which made total sense. The movie being hermetically sealed from the MCU would be stupid.

I feel the shared universe concept bruises the egos of some directors. That's not to say all criticism of such is invalid.
>>
>>78561819
I think that's unfair. She seemed very respectful and honest.

She did not fuck them around like Edgar Wright.
>>
>>78564159
>It annoys me how alot of critics refused to give Peyton Reed credit because muh Edgar Wright.
Because Peyton Reed didn't do shit. Paul Rudd is the one who deserves any credit since after Wright left he was the one who brought in Adam McKay to rewrite the movie and made it his. Peyton Reed was just a baby sitter.
>>
>>78561819
Directing escapist movies AND indy movies is surely the most creatively fulfilling thing for a director.

You get to flex different skills in each which then feed into each other.

So Andy Serkis is bound to return to play Klaw (Serkis' involvement basically confirms he'll turn into living sound at some point).
I'm guessing T'Chaka and Shuri will be in there too.
