When I was a kid, I remember reading a Care Bears book.
It said that for all Grumpy Bear does to cheer children up and help them care again, he literally takes all their negative emotions and feelings sadness into himself, which is why he's grumpy all the time.
I've never found anything else to back this up, but I'm positive I read it.
