People don't care. They're not wired to care. They laugh at this for the same reason they went to see the Romans throwing people to lions: it amuses them. Little chemical switches in their bodies trip over and they're happy. They wouldn't be more happy doing something else - they'd be the exact same amount of happy, only it would take longer to be happy and they'd need to exert themselves to get happy that way. Most people are terrible at deferment of gratification, same as they are about understanding games of chance or working with large numbers and complex abstract concepts, because learning those things requires deferment skills they refuse to practice, because they would rather be happy for the least possible effort.
That's evolution for you. Animals that get happy for the least effort have the most energy left over to survive and procreate.
