The second one is good. The third is shit, and the first is just a product of it's time.
I barely remember the fourth, but I didn't hate it like I did the third, so it was probably okay.

I've always hated the Shrek movies, at the time everyone liked them, so I thought I was weird or something.
It's quite validating finding out years later they really were shit this whole time and I wasn't crazy.

From the times. People who grew up in the era that Shrek 2 was released found it much better than the first due to the humor and solid characterization. Unfortunately, Shrek 2's references and gags date it and unless you were part of that era, you won't understand why people think 2 is better than 1.
