How would a new Avatar series fare anyhow?
It would have to be about someone from the Earth Kingdom, could it be a story about the Earth Kingdom's troubled path to reunification? Korra was decidedly modern but still relatively rooted in the 30's/40's (bullet trains and mechs notwithstanding). Would a near-modern Avatar world still be interesting? Maybe it could be about bending becoming archaic and the Avatar is viewed as more of a novelty than any kind of authority or marvel worthy of the world's attention. I mean Bending was halfway there in Korra, they had them compete in arenas for people's entertainment and wars were waged with machines rather than armies of marching benders.
The new Avatar, in a kingdom still struggling to rebuild itself, maybe has to deal with his own nation losing it's identity and history (maybe the Water Tribes and Fire Nation have begun to annex parts of the Earth Kingdom to help themselves to their abundant resources) while he struggles with the idea of the world no longer having use for an Avatar.

It'd be like Wan's time, but in reverse. The spirits increasingly taking more and more land back from humans, and any attempt to fight back makes them go dark and leads to a slaughter. The Earth Kingdom is already a shithole where the only legitimate hope to unite it passed up the job, the Air Nomads are effectively nothing, and the Water Tribe is divided and right next to the portals (read: dead).
It's pretty much the Red Lotus's wet dream come true, and the higher ups Korra never bothered to track down can probably take the Fire Nation down between the spirits, their loss of trade with the Earth Kingdom, Republic City, refugees, and the Dark Avatar. Zaheer has a good chance of getting loose, and Kuvira's war equipment is still floating around and will probably get pilfered by a warlord or bandits.
Starting with Earth means the next Avatar will get to water (the most hax element) last, and they'll have a hard time finding any decent master to train them.
