It depends. Are you a Marvel employee who wants to keep his job? Then yes, he did.

not same poster but I remember watching an episode of those pawn shop things and some dude tried to sell his comic collection, he also had "sketches" that stan made during a con. stan himself told the guy he didn't know how to draw but he doodled something for him anyway.

As far as I've seen, Stan Lee has never claimed that he was sole creator of these characters, he almost always tells people that the artists had major input into the characters and, while he clearly enjoys the limelight, seems to be pretty humble when it comes to his role in their creations.

Kirby was obviously treated poorly by Marvel, but there's a whole legal side of things that Stan hasn't really got anything to do with.

Stan Lee pretty much confirms he thinks he's the creator of Spider-Man. He has to choose his words carefully though. This interview was filmed without his lawyer present.

>Implying you don't picture the bombastic, fantastic one of a kind intros that Stan penned for decades to intro comics.
Stan's a cool guy. It's a shame Kirby was such a hardass and couldn't mellow out to sell out just a little bit. Stan knew how to make money and have fun. I hope to be half as happy as Stan is at his age.
>>
>>78499540
Yeah, but that documentary was from nearly nine years ago. He might have changed his mind since then.

A lot of Annoying Alliteration, you mean.
>>
>>78497892
Yeah Stan left the comic end of Marvel to Roy Thomas really early on, he spent the rest of his years at the company just being the face and trying to work on toy, tv, movie deals
>>
>>78497221
All of the old DC creators are dead, Marvel just happens to be lucky enough to have a lich as their mascot.
>>
>>78497925
>Stan Lee has never claimed that he was sole creator of these characters

His version of how the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man were created revolve around him singlehandedly creating the characters after his wife encouraged him.
>>
>>78497064
I can not hate any spider cartoon. If it happens to be on when flipping through channels I will watch it. I really think it's impossible to do a spider cartoon badly.
>>
>>78500296
There even was a comic about him waking up in the middle of the night because he had the idea of Spider-Man.
>>
>>78500505
Wasn't his idea for Spider-Man just jump started by liking Tarzan and wanting a character to swing though cities like he swung through jungles?

I mean if you look at the Kirby pitch for Spider-Man it's clear Lee didn't really have a strong idea for the look of the character since it was so radically different from the Ditko design that Lee went with. Pretty sure the Kirby version wasn't even a kid
>>
>>78500610
Other sources say he got the inspiration by looking at a spider on a wall.
>>
>>78500153
Still slapped "Stan Lee Presents:" on everything though, right?
>>
>>78495927
>>78496919
Ironically, X-Men is Stan's baby more than any other of his so-called creations. He was the only one who believed on the project, even after it bombed, and he continue to pushing it after the cancellation. Also, it was Lee's idea to allow Wolverine to have real claws rather than wearing gloves.
>>
>>78501072
>it was Lee's idea
Proof or poof.
>>
>>78500743
That goes with being the face of the company yeah. Not sure if that was him or the business side of Marvel

Honestly most of the hate people direct at Lee really should go towards the various Publishers at Marvel working above him. They were the ones that always viewed creative talent as replaceable and therefore deserving little respect

>>
>>78499540
In that same interview he talks about how he was a company man through and through. He never understood the need for "credit" when ownership was very clearly Marvel's anyway.

Stan became the face of the company because he was a good salesman and a huckster. He was the biggest driving force in expanding readership for not just Marvel, but all comics in general. He would be on the road for weeks at a time making appearances, and even giving talks at universities. All to spread the word about what Marvel was doing at the time.

All the while Kirby and Ditko were hilariously out of touch.
Kirby, even as early as the 70s was a near-senile, delusional mess who couldn't even remember what book he was in the middle of drawing.
Ditko was straight up Assburgers from day one, refusing to even make AUDIO appearances on the Merry Marvel Marching Society records for the fanclub.
So of course Stan is going to be the public face of the company. He was the editor, the art director, the talent scout and the cheerleader.

If Stan's sole contribution was to steer Kirby and Ditko's unbounded imagination into the Marvel we ended up with, then he's earned his place as The Man.

>the name of Kirby is still taboo at Marvel

That's not the case since the Kirby family settled out of court with Marvel/Disney. Now they put out Marvel-themed Jack Kirby collections and they put an official "Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby" credit on most of the comics.

The official credit is important because in the long run it'll wipe out most of the Lee vs. Kirby arguments. Most people think Lee created all these characters himself because he's alive and is the face of the company. Eventually most people will just know them from the official credits and Wikipedia articles that list them as co-creators. The bigger Kirby fans might prefer that his name came first or that Stan's name was dropped altogether, but they won't have to fight to get Marvel to acknowledge Kirby's existence any more.
>>
>>78502669
Some of Stan's credit-hogging may partly be about being the face of the company.

While Kirby was at Marvel, Lee was not telling whopping lies about the way the comics got created. In fact, in at least two different interviews in the late '60s he openly admitted that Kirby was doing most of the plotting and he only did the dialogue.

After Kirby quit it was necessary, for the purposes of the company, to downplay his importance. So he and other Marvel people started exaggerating his own importance out of all proportion.

I think it's fair to say that he is at the very least the co-creator though. For that matter, the big DC editors - Mort Weisinger and Julie Schwartz - probably deserve co-creator credit on a lot of characters from the '50s. These comics were made by editors as much as anybody else.
>>
>>78501280
Wasn't Stan the editor-in-chief's nephew?
>>
>>78505358
There'll be a huge backlash against Stan Lee after his death. This may turn really ugly, to almost Walt-tier levels of bashing
>>
>>78505475
Yes, the boss was married to Lee's cousin and Lee got the editor job after Simon and Kirby left. One of many reasons Kirby had no respect for him.

Kirby compared him once to Sammy Glick, the backstabbing hustler from the book WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN? who works his way up to being a Hollywood writer-producer despite having no talent.

That's probably unfair. Even if you only give him credit for the Marvel editorial style that's a real creative contribution. People have been trying and failing to imitate Lee's tongue-in-cheek bravado for decades.

Kirby can't draw more than 2 body types. That's why his Spider-man looked like Captain America.
>>
>>78505449
But Stan was the pioneer that made it standard practice to credit artists and others at the beginning of the book. Industry practice at the time was to have no credits whatsoever.
