This one needs some rephrasing to work. Assuming you're not some spitting retard who can cash welfare for life, you need to be honest with yourself and see what can be changed and what can't.
If you are lazy and unmotivated by nature you certainly need to get off your arse and apply yourself. If you are ugly and talk with a lisp or whatever, you need to take ownership of your flaw and work with it, or build up other strengths to compensate or check them.
I've seen people with terrible weaknesses team up to compensate for each others flaws. They are getting the great job offers and pulling each other into work. The ones who settled with being their broken, whining selves and want the world to take them with their festering warts are reaping exactly what they sowed, which is absolutely bloody nothing.

Hard work can help a fucking lot though. Not everyone's experience is the same an all that, but usually if you try to show initiative and whatnot while working it should at least provide some sort of benefit. You can build connections from people being impressed at your work, which will usually help you move up in a company. It won't always, but it's one of those things that has a better chance at helping your situation than hurting. There's also the sense of pride that comes with doing a job well done.

Empathy is important, but you need to pair it with action for it to have any benefit. Plenty of people think sitting on your ass and doing what amounts to "slactivisim" is enough but that's all clearly horseshit. Empathy just helps you create a better connection with the people you're helping and spurring you into taking action. I rarely see any cartoons saying that though, it's usually something along the lines of DOING the right thing and whatnot, emphasis on doing.
