It's a very pressing question. It deserves multiple askings. Grandma obviously has something to do with it. Maybe she found her adopted daughter and her husband pimping their daughter Ruby out to their friends. In a blind rage, she killed both of them in full view of Max, traumatizing him so badly he's gone semi-mute and somewhat autistic. Unwilling to be cared for by adults, whom she now has trouble trusting, Ruby refused to live with Grandma, so they live alone, with Grandma filling in where necessary. In indiana, we got a standardized test for middle school called the ISTEP. Well we had to read a portion of Max and Ruby's Pandora Box.
