Would anyone be surprised if it turned out that Ben was actually Luke's son? We learn that Luke sensed there was too much Vader in him and didn't want him to grow up with the Force, figured he'd be better raised by Leia as a diplomat/senator whatever doing good in the galaxy and thinking of others. They try it out and Ben is just too much to deal with, too much darkness, so they decide his place is with his real father - leading to the shitstorm that made Luke run away from the rest of the galaxy.

I would've bet on Chewie next because of Peter Mayhew, but given that they've hired a second actor who does all of the action scenes and seems to be working as an understudy, I could see Chewie sticking around. He's too popular for them to kill off.
You could argue the same about Han but let's face it, Harrison Ford didn't want to keep doing this and there isn't exactly a "Harrison Ford understudy" that could take over the role.
I think Leia will survive the trilogy. I can agree that if Luke's going to die it'll probably be in 9, when he has nothing left to pass on and Rey comes into her own and passes her big trial, ready to then pass on her knowledge to the next generation.

She did seem to know Obi-Wan by reputation, if not personally, but it still seems like a stretch for her to want to name her son after him. Even if she did, her deciding to call him Ben is even stranger since she mostly knew him as Obi-Wan. The only character who is more familiar with "Ben" than with "Obi-Wan" is Luke, so that name would have meaning to him and it's understandable that he would name his son Ben. With Leia it makes less sense.
Though I like to think he has a stranger first name, and they asked Luke what's a good middle name and he said "Ben." So his full name is something like Thrantarider Ben Solo and Han just went "yeah whatever I'm just gonna call him Ben" and pretty much everyone else agrees, so Leia is the only one who ever calls him Thrantarider.

I'll let you in on a little secret. See I work at Lucasfilm (can't tell you who I am or they'll throw me in the carbonite chamber) and I've seen some of the preliminary stuff Lucas did for his Ultimate Special Ediiton back before the Prequel Special Editions and theater re-release was shitcanned by Disney.
Turns out there's extended scenes where Darth Vader actually recovers Luke's severed hand. We get a screen wipe and then in an homage scene to Anakin's transformation in ROTS we see Vader saying, "Arise." A mechanized bed shifts from horizontal to vertical revealing Luke's hand now outfitted into Grievous' old cyborg body only with Luke's hand for a head. Vader says, "If my son won't rule by my side, perhaps you will." Slowly the hand clenches into a fist, shaking, and then slowly the middle finger raises. Then the cyborg suit's arms split and they raise their middle fingers too. They didn't have it yet but the script calls for Vader to shout, "YESSSSSSSS!" Then fade to black and credits roll.

Because introducing the new characters and their stories are much more important than that. The Senate stuff is still in the novelization and side material.
So about the politics, even though the movie didn't explain, from what I understand, it's that the Galaxy is essentially in a neutral time.
Some planets have joined the New Republic and many former Imperial planets have chosen to stay neutral.
Membership in the New Republic is not mandatory and there is peace pretty much throughout the Galaxy.
The First Order created itself outside the view of the Republic in the Unknown Territories and is slowly gathering up formerly Neutral Imperial planets.
This isn't strictly illegal to the New Republic, so they're just watching it nervously.
Meanwhile, Leia is taking a proactive approach to stop the First Order with her Resistance, and even though her Resistance has no strict allegiance to the NR, she is receiving hidden support from them, which in turn annoys the First Order who views the Resistance as a violation of their peace with the NR.

The philosophy and presentation of the Force and its various students takes cues from many religions and philosophies and thus intrigues me in a similar manner. The warrior aspect is undeniably cool as well, but I would honestly watch or read a drama about Force users in which a lightsaber is never drawn. I really enjoy how the Force is by nature mysterious and unknowable, and thus the only truth we glimpse of it is through the eyes of flawed mortals who hold many conflicting beliefs.

Too few of them actually believed in any deeper abstract ideals, most was just greedy. You can't make a functioning faction out of Trench, that one Devaronian with eye prosthetics and some droids, especially not one that'd be a considerable power in the galaxy.

The Republic did become corrupt again, they disliked making 'treaties' with the First Order, they didn't like how centralized the New Republic had become, they didn't like the idea of reducing military expenditures, they want reparations from the Clone Wars, they think the New Republic is exploiting/targeting former CIS members unfairly compared to other planets and systems etc. etc.
There could probably be a dozen more things they could dislike about the New Republic, either new problems or unresolved former problems.

I disagree. Season 6 was set up deliberately to have us go through tragedy after tragedy, only to end on a hopeful, if bittersweet note. Yoda's arc was the perfect final sendoff. It was telling us that things are going to get so much worse, but there will always be something to hold onto
The Clovis arc was probably the underrated gem of the season. Was a perfect example of how things can turn up to eleven when the Sith take an active approach to things

Y'know, in Tarkin, the CIS is still around. There are hold-outs who are attacking/resisting the Empire... but generally they are in hiding.
Some of the CIS remnant elements helped the rebellion in the GCW. As per Disney canon.
So it isn't impossible to consider the idea of those planets and remnants wanting to go their own way after the war.
Hell, the Ep-7 book mentioned some planets 'staying neutral' even. So we might see a Confederacy of "neutral" planets.

So while the main body of the CIS may have ceased to be by the time we get to ROTJ or Battle of Jakku... the concept and the planets that were once CIS still exist.
By the time of the New Republic being fully formed, plenty of planets had, canonically, said "No!" to joining the NR.
In Episode 7's novel it is explicitly stated that there are planets and regions who are not part of the First Order nor the New Republic. They are generally ignored by both.
So when will we see some pod racing?

Doesn't even make sense, we know from Rebels, and some of the Canon books, that Force Sensativity is weaseled out of Cadets. The Knights of Ren are probably where all the Force Sensitive Stormtroopers are sent too, so it doesn't make sense for Finn to be Force Sensitive.

The movie was great but what ever they do with the franchise they will never capture the same amount of excitement from black Star Wars fans ever again. Alot of people I know where excited for this specifically because they thought there would be a black jedi lead. Now that they know that isn't the case the hype is dead. Finn is a great character but he's not really a progressive character like people say he is. Finn isn't really any different from War Machine or Falcon. He's a great black sidekick but he's still a sidekick.
