Can we have a classic (read: traditional/2D) Disney animation thread?

I'll start by askingg: Will it ever come back? If so, Robin Hood sequel when?

Don Bluth and 2D Dreamworks discussion is allowed too I guess, but don't overdo it.

Not sure why this thread isn't getting any discussion. I guess 4chan /co/ had an influx of millennials the past few years and they didn't get to experience any of the classics? A real shame if that's the case.

Anyway here is something more recent. Brother Bear has possible the best use of colour I've ever seen in a movie. It's so highly underrated too.

Did they do the digital smoothing filters on this release too?
>>
>>78420969
Millennials are as old as 34-35.
I'm nearly 30 and watched tons of classics. Its just 6am in burgerland and its a holiday.
>>
>>78421008
Fun fact, numerous characters are voiced by actors known for doing westerns. This is because at one point in the production the setting was the old west. Explains why there's a sheriff in a medieval setting.
>>
>>78421044
looks like it.

>>78421046
I thought 'millenials' meant anyone under the age of 20.
>>
>>78421063
I think people are calling those "post-millennials". Then again, few can seem to come to a consensus on what age range millennials are anyway.
>>
>>78421063
Millenials is meaningless half the time, often meaning "people younger than [the author] that [the author] doesn't like". Like, I've seen some people put it back as far as those born in 1985 which is absolutely retarded

I love when OP gets lonely and bitter within the first ten posts and goes off on to passive-aggressively explain why it is that nobody is posting in their thread.

Classic traditional 2D Disney is dead. Get over it.
If you want traditional 2D animation (or at least animation done with modern techniques that emulate a traditional style), you should now look outside of the US, most particularly (but nor limited to) France (Triplettes of belleville, Secret of the Kells, Ernest and Celestine, upcoming Dofus movie, etc ...)
>>
>>78421212
>Classic traditional 2D Disney is dead.
What makes you say that? The fact that the last few major traditional released by Disney failed at the box office is completely circumstantial/the fault of the marketing it has not got much to do with the medium. Disney was on a downslope in the 70's and 80's until the new 90's golden age which would have lasted much longer if it wasn't for Toy Story utilizing the 'newer is better' meme in people's minds. And there is still this misconception floating around to this day that 2D is somehow 'inferior' to 3D. It's just sheer bad luck
>>
>>78421267
Thing is, Disney Renaissance was instigated by Don Bluth's success and Who Framed Roger Rabbit serving as a catalyst for general interest in animation in general.

The only thing that would come close in this generation would be if all 3D films suddenly start failing really badly at box office.

Why can't they just co-exist?

I started working through them a couple of weeks ago. Realised I'd seen fuck all, only ones I had memory of were Jungle Book and Lion King, although I know for a fact I used to watch Dumbo a lot when I was very young, and I'm pretty sure I saw Pocahontas and Fantasia at some point.

Rewatched Lion King, which was great, then stuck on Hercules, which was not. Mulan was very good, and I have Aladdin ready to go, then will probably rewatch Jungle Book.

What are the key ones to get on right away?

I think there's a guide floating around somewhere. Personally the must-watch movies that you didn't mention would include from the early era
>Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinnochio, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Robin Hood,.

Then the later stuff would be
>Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Lilo and Stitch, The Fox and the Hound, Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Little Mermaid, Princess and the Frog, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear.

Don't get too caught up in worrying about watching the 'grily' stuff ie 'princess' movies they are genuinely good in story and animation if you care about both.
>>
*sigh*
>>
>>78420508
I think it will return once in a great while as something special, but I'm not going to get my hopes up that it will make some kind of a great return.

If one movie did get a sequel, I would have personally liked to see The Great Mouse Detective get one. They could do so much with it and even had that ending as if it was setting up for another film.
It had great characters, too.

>>
>>78421098
I agree. It was a very well animated movie, but I didn't think it was a very good movie. It had a "killing animals is bad" message but it turned the main character into the earth's largest land predator, which is thematically pretty stupid and it never really gelled with me.
>>
>>78420508
>If so, Robin Hood sequel when?

We're lucky they didn't make one in the age of Disney DTV sequels.

Since King Richard already returned at the end of the first one, it would just be random shit or a prequel with standard Robin Hood elements only with animals.

For a sequel they could somewhat go back to the original concept and take elements from the Reynard fable.

Set it maybe a good decade after the original. Introduce Isengrim - a wolf as another of King Richard's adopted(like Maid Marian) who usurps the throne, focus on the relationship between Robin Hood and his first and only son Reynard. Let's see how Robin Hood deals with bringing up his only son into nobility, possibly with Maid Marian out of the picture(passed away). Then once again having to deal with exile/being outlaws. And throw an older(late-teens)Skippy in there somewhere too. Boom, there's a seed for a decent sequel right there. It could expand upon the themes and tone we experience in the original. And just imagine it visually executed with more contemporary techniques like Brother Bear and Princess and the Frog.

Boom.

It's certainly far from the best but it doesn't feel like a waste of time.

It was made during an era when people simply didn't give a fuck about Disney anymore. The baby boom from after WW2 had all grown up and Disney's target demographic was tiny. Thus Disney didn't have money so the movie was made on a budget.
If you compare this movie to earlier Disney movies like Cinderella or Snow White and also the later ones like anything from the 90s, you'll notice that this movie have fucking nothing in terms of frames and even reuses animation cycles from earlier movies.
It had to be made fast, thus the recycled animations, it had to be made cheap, thus lesser frames because lesser frames meant less money spent on color and animators.

I could name quite a few movies that i like better than this but what i do like about Robin Hood is that it doesn't try and present itself like a masterpiece like others did. It's cozy and i can appreciate for the very same reasons that i can appreciate The Sword in The Stone.

Not really. One generation typically lasts somewhere between 18-22 years, so if you were to define "Millennials" as the last born before the 21st century, they would be those born between before 2000 but after 1980 (or as late as 1982). Generation X would then be those born between about 1963 and 1982, Baby Boomers would be 1943-1963, and so on. Defining Millennials as simply anybody under the age of 20, as >>78421063 said, would extend the length of Gen X from 1963 to 1995.

Chances are, most people browsing this site (i.e. the 18-34 demographic) are all Millennials. If the pre-2000 definition of the generation is used, then you won't see "post-Millennials" legally posting on this site for another couple years.
