The thing that many people don't quite realize is that dances used to be a major form of entertainment. Being able to dance, and dance well, was a skill that was valued because it was what people did for fun. Dances were held every week, and a couple of times a year, a special dance was held where everyone would dress up extra fancy and play at being higher class. It was a special event that held a special place in their minds as fun, exciting, and wildly romantic.
Then it stuck around because culture is entirely centered on the childhood of Baby Boomers, and only just beginning to create its own separate traditions as they die off.
