Yeah, actually most mammals eat the placenta. Some say it's to discard it so it doesn't attract predators and apparently it also does provide some sort of benefits to the mothers due to the prostaglandin and some oxycontin in it which helped with their pain threshold. But that was studied in rats, not humans.
Eating human placenta also isn't a recent thing, it's been around before western culture. It's still gross, though.

I'm skeptic about this oxytocin thing. Oxytocin is not an hormone derivate from cholesterol like estrogen, it is a peptide, in other words, a very short protein.
