I think the creators chimed in on them and stopped the writer if he went for something non-cannon (like I think he attempted to include Jet in a story and they had to tell him definitively that Jet died). Other than that yeah, they're much the same tone, bright colorful art, real similar tone in stories, picks up like, right where the show ended.

I like to think that Sokka died in a glorious battle. Every one was running and he stopped and told them to go on without him. He had nothing but his sword and his trusty boomerang. Later the crew would return to see Hundreds of soldiers dead. His sword would be broken off in one of them. They would find Sokka's lifeless body in the front of all them clutching onto his boomerang.
Like in berserk except cooler cause of the boomerang and the fact that he dies
