Soup nailed a lot of the major points.
In addition they released the first volume redubbed in Japanese in Japan and it's apparently selling gangbusters.
Based on their last livestream, htey're planning to bring more RWBY japan merch over here as well as indicating the show, during and after this season will undergo a "shift in tone" per Miles words into darker territory.
Lets see what else. They might be finally moving away from poser after this season but nothing concrete yet. Grimm Eclipse is selling well and JNPR are apparently the first team slated for DLC characters after they get more bug fixes and levels up.

The best way to describe it is more "deliberate". This season you can really tell they've focused on giving the characters a bigger personality through facial animations. As a result, fights are slowed down a lot more so you can focus on their expressions which I think personally is a net gain for the show. Some of the other fights devolved into an expressionless or very little expressioned character whipping around and tearing stuff up, but they may as well have been a doll or something. The characters now for the most part are more expressive and talk and interact more during the fights which is much more enjoyable imo.

I'm actually pleased with it. Yes, the choreography and the acrobatics of the fights have taken a downturn, but I like that the fights incorporate more of the characters' personalities and emotions into their movements and the fights in general.
Take the Qrow vs. Winter fight for example. If Monty had made it, it would've been a spectacle with tons of crazy movements and fast maneuvers that would be gone in the blink of an eye. It'd be a treat to watch, but there'd be little dialogue, little emotion, and little weight to the fight itself. It'd look like a dance demonstration and be as emotionless and staged-looking as when JNPR burst into dance during the prom arc.
Right now, the fights are definitely less pretty, use more animation shortcuts, and are all around less entertaining as fights, but the characters talk to each other, they emote, and the fights seem like they're occurring between actual characters rather than mannequins playing out a choreography. I'm enjoying it more even if it's less stylish and bedazzling than what Monty did.

On paper it seems counterintuitive, but in action I wholly agree that it helps develop the relationship between the fighters in a more explicit, digestible format.
Jormungand was given some shit for dialogue during the middle of firefights, but it achieved so much to help identify and conceptualize each member of Koko's 10-merc army.

That's really the only objectively right way to enjoy a fight. Following the hollywood method of cutting camera angles every hit, shot, and move is a sure way to lose your audience's attention.
Since you're a pugilist, what's your take on Yang's boxing and other characters' hand to hand combat displayed?

Well obviously yeah it's a balancing act. You don't want to go full anime and have a full 10 minute sidebar during gun or fistfight but on the other extreme some of the early ruby fights were just pure spectacle. Like you could see the character model reverting to the default neutral facial expression because they were so busy making some kind of tripple flip spinning uppercut that you might as well be watching a cyborg wearing some skin or something.
Take episode 5 for example. Neon and Flynt. Lots of dialogue, but the fight moved at a fairly fast pace, especially with Neon. She's whipping around initially beating the shit out of Yang and at the same time trash talking Yang and getting under her skin. If she didn't say anything, I'd chalk it up to:
"Ah ok, generic acrobatic anime character #135 with a Jet Set Radio Motif"
But they inserted I'd say a generous amount of dialogue and gave her a deliberately annoying personality which made her a much more memorable character than if she had fought like in season 1 or the first half of season 2.

It's very sloppy. Yang continually drops her hands, punches across herself, throws herself at people like Struve and has absolutely no answer for people who can step in on her.
There's also a multitude of issues in her movement ability to avoid getting hit and adequately returning fire.

Monty's fight scenes were interesting primarily because his works were a rare example of 99% action. Very sparse quiet time or buildup, and instead we got unrelenting payoff of meticulously crafted moves, parries, ripostes, and counter-ripostes.
It's not hard to see that if you're attempting long-term world building, you're going to need more tricks than stringing one kerfuffle melee after another.

I was JUST about to talk about WY vs. FN. It's a pretty great example of them striking that balance, and definitely a new favorite fight of mine. If Yang's victory had been a bit less contrived, it'd be a 10/10 to me. Weiss, Yang, Flynt, and Neon's personalities all shown through while moving the fight along.

Yup that fight I think strikes the right balance of just enough dialogue while still keeping a good pace. JNPRvBRNZ fight I think was too dialogue heavy and too broken up, but I'll chalk that up that animating 4v4 is a right bitch and they wanted to save time/effort on that front. SSSNvIDGO I think was also pretty good, bit dialogue light, but it conveyed just enough to get the point across (Neptune's twinkle toes I think eclipsed anything that could have been said up to that point)

If the crew wanted to sell the idea of Yang being a beserker they're doing a very piss poor job of it not in what they are getting wrong but what they are getting right.
Yang's kicks to the head, her blows that come off spins it's all very pretty as hell.
I always go to MMA for examples on Yang because unlike boxing and kickboxing you'll typically find a very uglier sort of style because the art of grabbing on to a motherfucker and pounding away is encouraged. It's ugly as shit and if Yang's style is just whaling on a motherfucker even by instinct she should have realized that blows hurt more when the other guy is pulled towards them.
I.e. Cain Velazquez and Matt Brown.

Of course it's light years behind. A lot of avenues are closed when you throw in grappling.
But the thing I like about it is the fact that it brings out a diversity that is incredibly easy to notice and pretty as hell to watch. You can sit down and within the better echelons see just a wellspring of shit people are throwing at walls to see if it works.
