The problem isn't so much in the main book as it is on the tie ins. Only way to save this shit is to be a person of power at Marvel and fire all the imbeciles that made Iron Man look like a Nazi. Then fire all the idiots who made Captain America look like the savior of humanity. Hire people that can write a book that made both sides look good in the tie ins.

Also cut the Spider-Man crap and make him stay with Tony till the end.

find someway to have Nick Fury running SHIELD at the time. Maria Hill was always an ineffective character up to that point and having Iron Man be the de facto lead of the pro-registration side made it look more like a power move for him than him actually believing it was the right thing to do. At least with Nick pro-registration would seem more legitimate; both as a cause and as a threat to Cap's side

Honestly, I'm writing a fanfiction based on rewriting Civil War, and that's why I asked this question. Thanks for the feedback.

Civil War is the perfect platonic form of a dumb event comic.

Any attempt to improve it makes it a worse event comic. Actually engage with the notion of the superhero registration act and you get in the way of the dumb punch ups.
Have the characters talk to each other like theyve known each other for years and their not insane, gets in the way of all the punching and surfing on jet fighters.
Theres a bunch of set up with the Fantastic Four which the pay off for was cut, but that wouldnt have resulted in a cool action scene.

You could take the premise and do a serious book with it focusing on the political dimensions, or a really character focused version where you really get inside a characters head and have a bunch of quiet moments, but then its not an event comic.
