>"adult" cartoon
>it's just edgy nonsense or an animated sitcom gimmick with bad art catered to twelve year olds

Why would you do this?
>>
>>78364492
So, I guess Fantasia is what you want? Or does it have to be "accidentally" adult since making it "intentionally" not for kids is considered edgy? I'm starting to empathize will all the "REY IS NOT A MARY SUE" hysterics because I feel the same way about, "He said fuck. Oh wow, 3edgy7me, totally for 13 year olds right?"
>>

bingo
>>
>>78364492
>catered to twelve year olds
most adults have the humor of a 12 year old tho.

>"adult" live-action show
>nice complex story which thoughtfully touches on various deep themes, beautifully written dialogue, and characters which develop in realistic and meaningful ways
>>
>>78364492
Why don't you enlighten us on what makes a good adult cartoon then, family.
>>
Blame Hanna Barbera for saturating the market with comedy cartoons and perpetuating the mindset that animation is for kids.
>>
this actually really fucking annoys me
the USA has some pre-conceived notion that cartoons are only for children, so anything made for adults is an edgy comedy with mediocre art and stocky animation
meanwhile, asia and a good chunk of europe can make good animated movies that are actually for audiences over the age of 11
>>
>>78365319
King of the Hill, Bob's Burgers
>>
The American animation industry is inimical to anything that isn't tried and true.

NOTHING gets greenlit unless
1.) It's a raunchy comedy sitcom
or
2.) it's so cheap there's no possibility for it to be a real investment failure, but low production costs hamstring the show from the start.

Until someone comes along and somehow makes an adult cartoon that's plot driven, has an overarching continuity, treats character development seriously, employs mature themes, makes a point out of art quality and shows it can be a formula for smashingly success, the prospect of making such a cartoon is too daunting and uncertain for investment
>>
and yet people got mad when Rick and Morty started to do things differently.

Moral Orel
Venture Bros
>>
>>78365483
Anime have some like those but executives view is "so they like big eyes and action lines? Let's put those in our cartoons too!"
>>
>>78365624
Moral Orel was episodic for most of its run. It wasn't pitched as the dark character study with continuity, it evolved into that, and its final season was truncated and ultimately cancelled because of that.

Venture Bros is closer. Maybe the closest thing to it in the last 10 years. I'd say it only falls short in the way it borrows so many things from pop culture. So many episodes are parodies of old movies, cartoons or comic tropes. As they've exhausted more of those they've been relying on their internal universe for more plots which is a good thing. It's still hasn't achieved the kind of Simpsons or FG renown and success that would make it an example for future more serious adult cartoon endeavors.

Oh please, do you really think an animated non-comedy could ever get that popular? The best we could hope for would be an animated Heroes.

I never meant to imply it wasn't a comedy, It's just not a comedy in the sense that Futurama, Family Guy and Simpsons are comedies.

>>78365483
Of course this is true. John K claimed that, when he worked at H-B, Joe Barbara told him they were tired of Scooby Doo spinoffs and couldn't stand them, but the networks kept ordering more and more of the things.

It's a rather irrational but quite normal part of human nature to fear anything different or not status quo.
>>
>>78365878
The fargo characters are pretty cartoon like. I do think this could work.
>>
>>78366873

>memeing this hard
>>
>>78365486

But it doesn't. It still does the edgy sitcom nonsense with bad art. Having some shitty sci-fi twist does not somehow make those things go away.
>>
Fucking Trip Tank promos infuriated me to no end. That show seems to be the worst example of this issue. Drawn Together (pre season 3) is the only example of a "look how raunchy we can be because we're on an adult oriented network" show done right because it's clever, even outside of racy scenarios.

>>78365445
Mature animation blocks are so oversaturated by shows trying to be the next Family Guy that we constantly forget about shows like these
>>
>>78366873

You are just gonna make the liberals and fat women on this board upset. Thank goodness the mods moved the generals to trash. Even the mods agree how bad the show and it's fans are.

No, the blame goes to people post Simpsons that that adult animation can only be what OP described.

It's all of the above. The west is awful when it comes to cartoons. Just leave it to the Japs. They got making video games and animation down to an art. Even though it's admittedly not perfect 100% of the time.

by spending money to hire people to do it for you or by spending money and putting in effort to learn how to do it yourself. You could put out a whole animated series by yourself, you know, it just would take up a ton of time and effort and wouldn't get you any recognition unless it was actually good.

To be fair, when you exclude Adult Swim, the amount of edgyness in adult cartoons goes WAY down.

>Drawn Together
>not being two of the worst offenders
>>
>>78370085
I don't think South Park qualifies for 'edgy nonsense'. Particularly nowadays, where it's a lot less "let's put in crude violence for no reason" than before.
>>
>>78366034
With the rise of popularity of anime in the west, it is slowly becoming more accepted that animation can be serious.
>>
>>78369676
I really wish Koth made a bigger impact on adult animation. It had a sense of maturity in its writing, that not even Simpsons had.
>>
>>78364492
Thanks Family Guy

>>78370170
This. South Park started to move away from being about "omg those kids are swearing, and one of them died!" by around season 5.
>>
Just watch anime instead.

ITT: insecure people trying to justify why they only watch children's cartoons

At the very least, it lasted a lot longer than I honestly would have expected it to, considering it never reached Simpsons and Family Guy levels of popularity.

Simpsons and FG still had plenty of cartoony zaniness to them - KOTH was always just a little too dry and grounded in realism to be as popular as them.
