can y'all help me with a good entry into Marvel?
I've always had a lot of respect for their artistic teams but I just never really found a good point to begin with Marvel because it seems almost more convoluted than DC
I'm way into Spidey and DD hence picture but never really got into much else. I figure it'd be cool to see what you guys think is essential or what underrated bits should be included, etc.
Thanks yo

Pre-reboot Waiddevil is the only Marvel I've read since Superior Foes.

Miller's DD is pretty much the best cape work ever in comics.

The Ultimates 1 & 2 are great, though out-of-continuity.

Nextwave is hilarious, but also out-of-continuity.

Simonson's Thor is excellent.

The first arc of Aaron's Thor run is a modern classic, but everything after that is unreadable.

Silver Surfer Requiem is a must read, though, again, out-of-continuity.

Iron Man Extremis is a solid introduction to the character.

Planet Hulk is recommended.

Garth Ennis' Punisher is one of the best comics ever and you can read part of it here:

Ignore all other posts. Start with Kirby & Lee's F4.
>>
>>78330968
this is helpful, thank you.

Other than that, maybe I should list specifics I'm interested in?
I wanna know how Thanos plays into all this stuff. I wanna know what the deal with Dr Strange is, I wanna know where I should start with say the Avengers, X-Men, and FF (other than the obvious silver age stuff)
I wanna get a good beginning for Hulk that isn't some crazy continuity fuckery

Gimme the basics, but the basics in detail. Catch this pleb up.
>>
>>78331002
and of course
>>
>>78330832
How far you trying to go back? Ed Bubakers Cap run is the good starting point for modern Marvel, it was 2004 I think.
>>
>>78330854
Waid DD is sweet, yeah. I'm just tryin to get more deep into the MU because like I'm pretty set with DCU and I don't even really want to get into what's going on right now necessarily, just into the good stuff
>>
>>78331260
Yeah how about instead of OP reading the comics that lay out the structure of the Marvel Universe, let's have him read all these miniseries and one-shots and spin-offs that he won't even understand without knowing the characters first. Great.
>>
>>78331288
I guess what's considered "classic" at this point, but really just anything that's GOOD. I wanna just sorta get the rundown on pretty much everything. I know that's a really broad spectrum of things and I'm not expecting some sort of masterful all-knowing answer but anything helps, really.
>>
post this on the new board
>>
>>78331241
>Dr Strange

Someone post the rec image. Read the minis on it.

>FF

Byrne's run is probably the overall best intro. It's dated, but not as much as the Silver Age stuff, and it's still top tier.

>I wanna get a good beginning for Hulk that isn't some crazy continuity fuckery

Planet Hulk is great. Peter David's run is great, but a lot of people kind of ignored most of it afterward, so it might not be the best representation of the character even if it is probably the overall best run or at least close to it.
>>
>>78331319
This is /co/, faggot.
>>
John Byrne's Fantastic Four run in the 80s is phenomenal

Fantastic Four (artist) #209–218, (writer/artist) #220, 221, 232–293, Annual #17, 19

If you like Spider-Man, Kraven's Last Hunt is an essential arc

Jim Starlin is the name to look for if you're into cosmic stuff

And for Dr. Strange, just start at the beginning with the Silver Age stuff and keep going. It's a wild ride.

Also, dear God, read everything with Jim Steranko's name on it.

>>
Depends what you're looking for man.

If you want to read Thanos stuff, then I'd say read all of Jim Starlin's cosmic marvel stuff in order, then annihilation and its sequels after that. Trust me, it's worth it.

But if you want to read Avengers....
I'm probably the only person who'll say this, but if you haven't read much else then try Bendis's. It's often bad, but it's also often good, and it'll make everything you read afterwords better anyway.

The main downside of course being that it's REALLY LONG, like around 250 issues of reading from 2004 to 2012. And also requires you to jump around to different series' all the time. I don't think there's a complete guide for that anywhere because it would be really long and complex.

for Spidey
The Night Gwen Stacy Died
The Death of Jean deWolfe
Kraven's Last Hunt
Gauntlet, & Grim Hunt
Marvel Knights: Spider-Man
and more broadly JMS Spider-Man,
that covers a lot of key stuff for him.

Peter Par IS Spectacular Spider-Man also had some really cool misc stories

the Past Thor issue about him getting drunk with a dragon is really good

Sorry to hurt your feelings, mate. I just saw Anon making a mistake and I thought that I could offer a friendly correction.

>>78334117

you're responding to two separate people you're being berated by, just a heads up that you're being a bitch and a few people disagree with you
>>
>>78334145
So are you saying that ALL /co/ related threads go on /co/ and NOWHERE else?

Are you saying that there's NOWHERE else where /co/-related threads are allowed, and that ALL /co/-related threads must be posted here?
>>
>>78334176
I don't know what the other guy was saying, but I AM saying you're a bitch and you should just help the fuckin kid read some Marvel books instead of being a douche
>>
>>78330832
Other people are getting the really good, bigger runs, but I think one of the better things Marvel's published in the psat 5 years is Warren Ellis' Moon Knight. Only like 6 or 7 issues long.
>>
>>78334206
Anon said in >>78333895 that ALL /co/ related threads go on /co/ and NOWHERE else.

Why does it make you angry to see them corrected? Do you agree with them that ALL /co/ related threads go on /co/ and NOWHERE else?
>>
>>78334236
well, it's certainly not an issue that /co/ related threads end up on /co/ instead of elsewhere, even if they are slightly banal. I certainly don't even go on fucking /wsr/ so I wouldn't have been able to help
>>
stop responding to the autist and start posting recommendations

If you have a basic knowledge of X-Men history such as knowing vaguely who Apocalypse is, then Remender's Uncanny X-Force is fantastic for action
>>
>>78334323
>Remender
The problem with these threads is they spread shit taste
>>
>>78330832
>>78334349
also you should read Remender's Venom. Although it's not the classic Venom (it has some of it in there), it's really solid throughout.

>Nextwave is hilarious, but also out-of-continuity.
No it isn't.

Anyone got anything for the opposite? I'm a marvel nerd trying to get into DC, and I REALLY love Batman
>>
>>78334804
>Superman
John Byrne's Man of Steel miniseries and his run on Superman

>Batman
Year One is good place to start
Legends of The Dark Knight vol. 1 has a lot great continuity-lite stories

>Wonder Woman
George Perez's run on her

>Green Lantern
Emerald Dawn is a decent enough place to start

>Flash
Mark Waid's run on Wally is classic and great place to start as well

>Aquaman
Time and Tide by Peter David

>Green Arrow
Year One by Andy Diggle
The Longbow Hunters by Mike Grell
The rest of Grell's run on GA is really great too

>Martian Manhunter
John Ostrander's run

>Justice League
JLA: Year One by Mark Waid
The Morrison/Waid/Kelly runs on JLA are solid as well

>Other good stuff
Hawkworld vol. 1
JLI by Giffen/Dematteis
Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil by Jeff Smith
Suicide Squad by John Ostrander
Chase

That's all I've got
>>
>Fantastic Four
Stan Lee & Jack Kirby's run. Though long and more than bit dated, it lays out some very important foundations for the characters and the Marvel Universe as a whole
After that, move onto John Byrne's run

>Iron Man
Extremis by Warren Ellis a pretty good start for modern Iron Man
Matt Fraction's run

>Hulk
Hulk: Grey
Peter David's run

>Thor
The Jack Kirby and Stan Lee stuff isn't really good (besides Tales of Asgard), but it does provide the foundations of the character
After that move onto Walt Simonson's run

>Captain America
Man out of Time by Mark Waid
Caps has had a lot of good runs over the years, but the best modern run is definitely Ed Brubaker's

>X-Men
All of Chris Claremont starting with Giant Size X-Men #1

>Doctor Strange
Strange Tales #110-146 by Ditko & Lee
Doctor Strange: Season One by Greg Pak
Doctor Strange: The Oath by Brian K. Vaughn

>Punisher
All the Garth Ennis stuff starting with Marvel Knights Punisher and then Punisher MAX

>Iron Fist
Marvel Premiere #15-25
Iron Fist #1-15
Marvel Team-Up #63-64
Immortal Iron Fist #1-27

>Other good stuff
Alias by Brian Michael Bendis
Marvels by Kurt Busiek

That's all I've got
>>
>>78336168
cont.

You also said that you were in to DD and Spidey so here's some good shit from them

>Daredevil
Man without Fear by Frank Miller and his then the rest of his run on Daredevil
Ann Nocenti's run
Brian Michael Bendis' run
Ed Brubaker's run

>Spider-Man
Ditko & Lee Run
Gerry Conway's Run
Roger Stern's Run
JMS' Run
Spider-Man: Blue
Spider-Man's Tangled One (Lots of great one and done stories there)

And finally, that's all I've got
>>
>>78336255
*spider-man's tangled web
>>
>>78334804
>get into DC
>love Batman

Oh man, you are luck my friend. Currently, DC seems to be writing everything batman nowadays.

>batman new52
>detective comics
>the dark knight
>batman/robin
>justice league
>bat girl
>bat woman
>cat woman
>red hood & Arsenal /red hood & the outlaws
>suicide squad
>harlequin
>batman 66
>Robin: son of batman
>Gotham by midnight
>Gotham academy
>deathstroke the terminator
>batman and robin eternal
>batman Europa
Etc.

Trust me, batman is DC's poster child/flag ship at the moment and, arguably, always will be.
>next to superman
>>
>>78336402
Too bad most of it is garbage, including the main title.
>>
Kind of surprised nobody mentioned Thunderbolts, Deadpool or Exiles.

Exiles is actually a pretty good way to get familiar with the Marvel universe since it'll constantly force you to look stuff up.
>>
>>78336470
Thunderbolts doesn't quite pack the necessary punch if you don't know the characters and their usual habits.
>>
>>78335453
>Green Lantern
Emerald Dawn is a good place to start, if you decide you like Hal; I'd definitely also recommend the entirety of Geoff Johns run, which is one of the best longform comic runs of all time. After that, you could also check out Gerard Jones' run (Green Lantern v3 1-47), Emerald Twilight (GL v3 48-50), Marv Wolfman's run (GL v2 133-153) and classic Denny O'Neil GL/Green Arrow (you can just look up the trade for that).
