its just a trend you can identify once you see it a lot. the adventure time style was HUGE before adevture time came out, in fact i think flapjack kinda started it, but the adventure time style with the dot-eyes and tube arms was a legit trend on deviantart for artists just coming out of anime in, like, 2008 or something. i cant find examples because they were all 15 year olds doing stickers and pokemon crud so they werent well known.
maybe that cat drawing started it? the little grey striped cat doodles? poochie or something? around when that was made was when that style became popular among artists, and it was going to make its way to a cartoonist eventually.

No. They're drawn without blemishes or exaggerated facial features (besides Garnet and Amethyst's lips but they aren't necessarily ugly.) Take for example Double D's design. He looks like a fucking frog sometimes, especially when he cries or is freaked out, but he's endearing because we know his character. denying that there are trends in art styles (especially in stylized ones) is ridiculous. its not "nostalgia glasses". someone said anime earlier, and i remember in the early 2000s there was a huge trend between shows like toyko mew mew, shana, nanoha, and so on where they had those really thick lashes and freaking huge wide-set eyes that ended right with their noses. or shows like fruits basket and ouran where their noses and ligaments were outrageously long. just like the east, we have trends here. some are closer than others.
regular show and gravity falls look a lot alike when it comes to humans, and they both sorta look like chowder only they are a lot more "real" when it comes to proportions. SU and bare bears are like that too, only they are more like each other than they are like the previous ones mentioned. if you ACTUALLY dont believe this, you will in a few years when the trend changes and you look back at these shows.
