Been doing some Darth Vader and Star Wars storytimes over the last couple weekends and thought we could read the Annual that came out this week since I didn't see it posted on Wed. Like last weekend's SW Annual, this is by superior SW writer Kieron Gillen.
>>
>>78314804
>>
Why can't this guy draw the regular comic? Why must we be stuck with Larroca?
>>
>>78314804
It's easy being superior when the alternative is Jason Aaron's licensed work to be honest
>>
>>78314814
>>
>>78314827
DESU, I"m sure he hasn't read it, but this story reminded me more than a little of a Dark Horse mini called "Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin."
>>
>>78314838
It's been a while, but as I recall, that story also had a dynastic family in charge of some manner of mining operation on an inhospitable planet trying to have revenge on Vader.
>>
>>78314827
Now I'm just imagining him offering Trios's hand in marriage to Vader to reaffirm their alliance.

I'm a big fan of Leinil Yu, and I like how thick his Vader is, but not digging those pointy screws protruding from his facemask.
>>
>>78314896
>>78314820
His Gor the God Butcher arc on Thor is one of the best Thor stories ever. I agree his licensed work is uneven, but people who dismiss him completely are just parroting popular opinions on /co/.
>>
>>78314909
why are droids built with pain receptors...?
>>
>>78314909
Also, Gillen's Star Wars work has been one of the best mainstream monthlies of the last year.
>>
>>78314917
Because meat bags are terrible things.
>>
>>78314917
It's a servant droid. It's so you can teach it a lesson with full satisfaction.
>>
>>78314917
I dunno, but it's been canon since Jedi. Remember the droid torture room?
>>
>>78314929
>>
>>78314936
I always thought they tortured droids differently though. Like with odd numbers or something
>>
>>78314936
It doesn't make a lot of sense, but droid "rules" and AI have never been clearly enunciated anywhere I've ever seen in the new canon. I'm sure somewhere someone did an in-depth analysis of IG-88's motivations and AI for the old canon.

>>
>>78315134
>>78315133
Yeah. I prefer when he just chokes folks out.
>>
>>78315148
I really enjoy this unstoppable vibe theyre giving Vader. The opnening of Lords of the Sith where he throws himself out into space to board the ship and just kill everyone was so cool. Especially menacing when all that can be heard on the commlinks are screams and breathing.
>>
>>78315052
Yes. Trust the droids in complete black that don't look like any of the ones in your employ.
>>
>>78315163
Vader is Master Chief now. I like it.
>>
>>78315148
>>78315163
I just finished that last night. Good novel, but the ending was quite rushed and I would say that Vader and the Emperor scenes only constituted about 25-30% of the book and that's what I signed up for. It reminds us over and over that the Emperor really treats Vader like shit, though, so it's of a piece with Gillen's work in the comics.
>>
>>78315184
That's racist.
>>
>>78315193
>>
So, Vader just got his own, dark versions of C3PO and R2D2.

Which is sorta dumb.
>>
>>78315193
I'm only about 4 chapters into it but I'm constantly waiting for more Emperor/Vader stuff. It's not the Ryloth/Cham stuff isn't interesting, but I wanted more back story and interaction between the more interesting characters, especially as the book is marketed as such. Speaking of rushed endings, I felt that Tarkin ended very quickly as well. Hopefully lost stars won't have the same rushed feeling.
>>
>>78315134
Vader just casually surfs on lava
>>
>>78315202
I was bummed that TFA apparently doesn't have a lightsaber-amputating-arm moment. Robot arms are one of my favorite things about SW.
>>
>>78315202
You know, I've always wondered, why can't they just reattach limbs in the SW universe instead of getting protheses? We can do it here (provided the right conditions are present).
>>
>>78315221
He took extra time to practice after that last incident.

>>78315222
>two droids killing an entire room full of armed guards

What?
>>
>>78315222
>>
>>78314917

The sense of touch is ridiculously useful. I remember reading a comic where the robots had a problem with constantly screwing themselves up because they didn't notice when they banged into things or scraped themselves until they got something important caught.

So if, in star Wars, to avoid this they give the droids some basic discomfort feedback when they hit things, an "oh shit I'm tearing myself off better move" system could thereby probably be overloaded to cause panic and discomfort.

>>
>>78315247
>>78315218
>>78315242
They're murder bots. It's explicated to a greater degree in the main series, and I agree they are probably my least favorite aspect of said series. Still, it ends up playing out as dark comedy most of the time and they're side characters, so it isn't too bothersome.

The events in this story occur after the events in the digest Star Wars: The Clone Wars—The Sith Hunters,
and before the events in Star Wars Omnibus: Clone Wars Volume 3.

If you're a massive cunt I guess it isn't since I think only Marvel's new runs are explicitly canon... but considering it was made to fit with the Clone Wars tv show I'm saying yes.

Darth Vader : Book III
Kieron Gillen, Salvador Larroca et al.
Graphic Novel [Marvel]
• The planet Shu-Torin is revolting.
• Darth Vader is tasked with leading a military assault.
• Has Vader’s rise to glory begun?
Collates Darth Vader #16 thru #19 plus Darth Vader Annual #1.

The Annual is continuing in the main Vader comic after the Vader Down part ends. Looks like it doesn't go well for Vader.

A lot of people tend to write Vader as more than keenly aware of himself and what it means for normal grunts to even be around him, let alone having to deal with him personally; most end up dead through no fault of his own on a good day. As long as they are polite and do as they're told, he seems to try and make it as easy as possible for them. In her case, as he pointed out, she was intensely loyal to a fault, even if not to him. Vader prizes the shit out of loyalty.
>>
I really appreciate these storytimes, thank you.
>>
>>78314929
I am so on board with the number of times in this comic's run that sometime tries diplomacy, or an imposition of manners, or some other kind of social pressure on Vader and he just ups and force chokes them.

Pretty cool thread OP, but could Darth Vader beat the strongest Star Wars character, Rey?

And I'm not talking Scavenger Rey

No I'm not talking Crack Shot with a Blaster Rey neither

Heck I'm not even talking Ace Pilot Rey

I'm talking Master Jedi, New Captain of the Millenium Falcon Rey, with Luke Skywalker's lightsaber and full control of the force(allowing her to force push, force pull, and Jedi Mind Trick people)

....I didn't think so.
>>
>>78323391
Man, I am so glad the force is back to being a mysterious tap-in to use thing rather than something you have to get a blood test and spend 20 years at the academy for.

But either way Anakin was canonically the strongest potential force user ever so until Rey is established otherwise I'm saying no. Vader would certainly have fucked her up at the end of the movie pretty easily.
>>
>>78323348

More or less, and in multiple ways/forms, yeah.
>>
>>78315277
>>78315284
This is my vader the droids are just cherry on top with the dark comedy.
>>
>>78315277
I actually like Vader's whole evil crew. He has an evil R2, an evil CP3O, an evil Han and occasionally an evil Chewie. It's goofy, but it's also really great a lot of the time.
>>
>>78325484
Typical Disney shill
>>
>>78315286

Even in shit like/as far back as KOTR it's pointed out how little loss of body parts seems to matter in the Star Wars universe. I suppose it might matter if you or your culture value a whole, natural body, otherwise who gives a shit; the replacement bits usually turn out better in every way.

Kieron Gillen writes Darth Vader really well, even with a goofy cast of faux-C3PO and R2D2.
>>
>>78315222
Arms get removed in the second movie. Anakin and Luke attest to that. Who do you think is on the chopping block for VIII?
>>
>>78315237
Last I heard, Luke and Anakin had a rare genetic illness that made them reject their own cloned flesh. Other people may just be poorfags or want an arm replacement which can mount a laser or blade.

That was old EU though, so who knows if it ever gets a canon address.

Does anyone know if any of the current Star Wars books are kid friendly?
>>
>>78327725

The Star Wars Rebels comics I'm sure are for younger children.
>>
>>78328415

Yeah but cartoon-based comics always suck ass.
>>
>>78327725
Depends on what you'd consider "kid friendly". Kanan isn't any more violent than the rest of Revenge of the Sith and it's a nice companion piece to the Rebels TV show so if you're fine with that you should consider that one. The main Star Wars comics are pretty much as mature as the movies. Darth Vader is probably the darkest one but even then that's not saying much.
>>
>>78329779
These are good, I assure you.
>>
>>78329900

Kid friendly as in my mom wouldn't bitch at me if I got my little sister a Star Wars book. Written-for-kids books always felt condescending to me when I was a kid, so I didn't wanna get her those. The Kanan thing is a good idea, she watches Rebels so I bet she'd like that. Thanks for the help.

>>78329904

The comic and the book are the same story and they're both about as good as each other so it just depends on which medium you prefer really. The game is another look at the story from the perspective of a new character. While I enjoyed the game a lot when I was younger it hasn't aged very well and I'm not the biggest Dash Rendar fan so I'd suggest you skip it and stick to the book/comic.
