Ex-Troper here.

The site was plagued with spotty moderation due to the site founder being kind of nuts when it came to a lot of things on the site, the mod team being inexperienced most of the time, a shitton of fetishy content that almost got the ads shut down.

There's also the fact that the site couldn't decide whether it wanted to be Wikipedia Lite or a loosely collected series of fandom blogs. If the mod team stuck with one or the other, at the very least, the userbase wouldn't be at each other's throats as much.

I haven't been back proper in years, but I hear that they got rid of Fast Eddie, and they cleaned up most of the fetish stuff when I left.

Jumping the Shark: Many users feel that the site has done this thanks to recent events. moot suddenly started unfairly enforcing rules he never bothered with before, brought in a bunch of new authoritarian mods, and deleted an entire board just for being involved in a protest. This is causing many users to flee 4chan for the newly-created 8 chan, which has much looser but more effective mods and doesn't discriminate.

Anon, I don't think it's just the memes.
People on the outside that spend less than an hour on their computer a day think 4chan is the root of all evil on the internet, because /b/ has done some mostly harmless things since it was created, and since most of them have no idea what the fuck a 4chan is, they mostly rely on other websites (news based ones in particular) to tell them just what it is.
And since it's the job of the news to cover the worst over the best in a situation.. 4chan kinda gets caught in the middle there.
I don't even think a news article has talked about the occasional good stuff people on 4chan have done (at least i don't think so), like /v/ sending get well soon cards to Satoru Iwata.

I think the main problem was inviting every autist in the world in and letting them loose with no editorial control. The site might have stayed decent if every edit had to be approved by one guy, who deleted all the blatant trash.

Also: allowing fanfiction examples, allowing real life examples, allowing troper tales in any form whatsoever, and not putting in a hard upper limit for tropes per show and vice versa (about 20, so that leading autists actually have to pick relevant examples instead of listing everything that happened in all 1517 episodes of Ranma).

The answer is as simple as ~Autism~

The idea of documenting recurring patterns in common media isn't necessarily a bad one, but tvtropes shows that making it an open-source wiki-style resource just leaves it open to ignorant kids and the dangerously autistic kinds of NEETs that spend their lives watching MLP and masturbating in their parents' basements. This is also a good demonstration as to why most media-related boards on this site, including /co/, are frequently shit

A) How the fuck could anybody hold any sort of attraction to Linkara? The man fucking oozes repellent from every pasty, doughy inch of his body. The funny thing about tumblr is that it's a disorganized mess of blogs. The feature that filters what's on your dashboard is as close to baords as they get. So the SJ types are /pol/, but for tumblr. A lot people, here and there, have noticed things like this. I for one see tumblr as 4chans sister-site. A reflection of everything here. Think about it.
>4chan is probably 3/4 men
>tumblr is probably 3/4 women
>both have an extremist political minority that refuses to see the world realistically, and seeks to sway the future to their ideals
>both have a majority of posters that like gay porn of the opposite sex of the majority, as well as porn of the opposite sex with sexual organs of the majority sex (futa/fuccboi)
>both have a lot of stupid fucking jokes, puns, and shit/fun-posts, comments, and general site-wide humor that the average person would probably be offended or confused by
>both agree and understand Reddit is shit
>both hate, misunderstand, or distrust the other site for the superficial appearance of the aforementioned extremist political minority
And despite ALL of that, I still wouldn't be caught dead with a tumblr account. The navigation is too shit to deal with and their file size limit is ridiculous. I heard it was still only 2mb.

Found this on Deader Than Disco:

>/b/, one of the many boards on 4chan. In the late 2000s it was the internet's boogeyman, a central hub of memes and a force to be reckoned with. Its relevance and creative output in the '10s has dropped off significantly, both inside and outside of 4chan. There are a number of reasons this happened: the board found itself flooded with new users (many of them adolescents and teenagers) because of its reputation, many of the older users moved on to other boards (this created a cycle of newer users coming/older users going at a consistent rate), the board had a tendency to isolate itself from the rest of the site, and unlike other prominent boards that have evolved over time, /b/ has pretty much remained the same as it was around 2007, minus the rage comics. All of this pretty much assured that they get left behind as other boards moved on and influenced the site as a whole. /v/, /mu/, and /co/, while also experiencing a drop in relevance, still provide enough output to keep them in the scene, while /sp/, /fit/, /tv/, and /int/ have since stepped up as the more prominent boards of the site and have entered golden ages of their own. What was once 4chan's very core has now become an irrelevant pest in the eyes of other users.

Overall nobody really cares that much even if you get famous, at most it's just an interesting bit of trivia and something that may actually deepen the fan's appreciation, since sympathy to embarrassment is one of the things that draws people together. And if someone does notice and spread it around, all it takes to defuse the issue is to say "yep, I was a fucking moron, go ahead and laugh at me because goddamn that was a retarded thing I did" like how totalbiscuit wrote off his embarrassingly stupid SA rant about how much smarter he is then dumb atheists with his 150 IQ and law school degree.

The only time posts like that get dug up and passed around forever is when the way the person acts today is totally contradictory to the old posts and they try to bury it and refuse to apologize, like Ian Miles Cheong's neo-nazi teenage years or Dobson's inflation days or Linkara wanting to suck big black cock despite being totally not gay and 100% straight and also a good christian conservative man.

The thing with TvTropes, I think, is that their memes don't cycle.
4chan threads die. Tumblr and Reddit posts get forgotten/downvoted. But TvTropes shit just stays static. Their memes never become cringeworthy old jokes replaced by newer ones. That people like this are allowed to post
>Why Not Now: For me, Team Four Star has never sunk so low in their entire history than to have Krillin make an abortion joke in episode 44. An abortion joke! Really? Really?! At a time when women are constantly losing control over their bodies and facing the very real possibility of having a forced birth at least once in their lifetimes, making a joke that distracts the viewer from what is supposed to be comedic parody and brings us back to an increasingly worsening and depressing world was just plain all-around unfunny. This is a real, serious, and complicated issue that needs to be discussed, and like the ignorant sexists themselves who promote such views, Team Four Star reduced it to an insultingly childish level of simplicity, and that's just pathetic.
>Dr Zulu 2010: I enjoyed episode 1 for the most part, but even I have no liking to what they did to Carla AKA Eren's mother. Anyone who read the manga or watches the anime know that her death kickstart Eren's vengeful crusade against the titans. However, in the abridged version, her entire character is just a joke about her saying nothing than "Hmm Hmm". Yes! Carla's entire shtick in the whole 3 minutes of screentime is her saying "Hmm Hmm" over and over again. Come on. Faulerro's Null Metal Alchemist gave Trisha the same amount of screentime and she has more personality and more of a character than Carla. I don't expect her to be deep or well written, especially in a condensed adaptation of five episodes of the series, but Team Four Star should know better than having her saying just "Hmm Hmm".

The scars of TV Tropes's pony phase still remain. They're on every page now, usually about three-quarters down in the Western Animation section.

Maybe, but at least 10% of their given examples are absolutely worthwhile. I'd've never found some great fics without their help. The other 90% though...

oh okay, I knew about IVs, i frequent showdown but I haven't actually been able to front up some money for a real game in awhile so i didn't know there was desriptions correlating to them.

Back when I went to that site I found one worthwhile fanfic, and you wouldn't even call it that really because it was for D&D. I only remember it for the authors ability to perfectly capture the feel of a shounen fightmans manga in text.

What was it called? Now I'm curious.

Looked it up again, it was called Adventuring for Dummies. It's still on the fanfic recs page for tabletop Dungeons and Dragons.

Shit, It's been 10 years.

It's not on fanfiction.net anymore m8

Everyone's head is up their asses.

Fine for somewhere like here, Reddit, blogs, etc., but this is a "comprehensive" (as they keep asserting in a frequently smug-feeling way) Wiki were talking about

That thing they link to isn't it either.

Just imagine if the guy behind One Piece ran a D&D campaign. A guy takes half steps in 7 league boots to kick peoples asses. At one point the bard stares at his reflection and bluffs himself so hard he become a barbarian to win a fight. Silly, creative shit like that.

-Use of italics for emphasis
-Their stupid inside jokes like BRIAN BLESSED or whatever the fuck
-The same sarcastic tone on every single page
-Their use of italics of emphasis.
-Their stupid as shit terminology like "subverted" that they all think make them sound sophisticated.
-The endless unnecessary captions of people thinking that they're being hilarious
-Seriously, if any troper is reading this, please fuck off with the fucking italics.

Do you know how much dumb shit I posted on SA when I was 13? I shudder to think what would happen if I ever ran for public office. At least that retardation is probably hidden behind a paywall.

A TVTropes article is a piece of fiction with everything that makes it worth experiencing removed. Once you realise this the site gets very boring, very quickly.

Compare the page size for any given Shakespearian play or classic film to the page for a flavor-of-the-month anime sometime. Or don't, if you value your belief in a just, loving world.

Just for an experiment, I decided to compare Shakespeare to Sword Art Online. Ctrl-Fing suggests that Hamlet's main page has around 160 examples, and it's something of an outlier (King Lear has about a third that). Meanwhile, the characters page for just Kirito has around 170 examples.

So... yeah, according to TV Tropes, the bland, overpowered protagonist of a flash-in-the-pan anime that everybody stopped caring about after about six months is worth greater analysis and compiling than one of the most famous and enduring works to ever be written in English.
