The first thing that comes to mind when I think of that is 1/0, which is interesting enough but gets unbearably preachy and masturbatory at times. It was improvised day-by-day, though, and seems kind of like the author's attempt at some self-exploration that wasn't primarily meant to appeal to others.
How about the character have the creator's looks and personality, but they don't state that their the creators in the series? In fact, he is part of the the series's universe

people assume it's the author's self-insertanyway and treat them as such. the personality doesn't even have to be the same. the author of jojo was horrified to find out that many of his fans assumed he was as big an asshole in real life as his manga author character Rohan

If they are not a Mary Sue it isn't too bad. But when they make themselves an OP Mary Sue it's a bad idea. On the other hand if they insert themselves to be killed, make a cameo or something like that it's okay.
