Torrents/piracy is your friend.

In particular, you can find "special editions" of the Complete Casefiles online that use the 80s colorized versions of the various Dredd Comics that were released in the US, instead of the original B&W versions of said stories.

You really should! There's been one a week for thirty-odd years, and there's some real gems in there. A lot of people remember the big epics like the Apocalypse War, The Cursed Earth, Oz, and more recently things like The Days of Chaos, but the real strength of Dredd is in the short, perfectly contained, charming little stories.

Don't forget the other 2000AD series either. There's not just stories set in Mega City One or even Dredd's universe (Psi Judge Anderson, The Low Life, The Simping Detective, Armitage, Shimura / Hondo City Law, Missionary Man, Insurrection, Lawless, and many more), but lots and lots of others. You've got action packed future war stories with Rogue Trooper; bizarre sword and sorcery sci-fi with Nemesis the Warlock; meditations on the human rights combined with plots to save Ronald Reagan and hang out with vikings in Strontium Dog;
gripping gritty contemporary action in Button Man; imaginative fantasies like Slaine, Mazeworld and Tales of Telguuth; Tsarist science-fiction romantic comedy epic Nikolai Dante; all sorts of horror stories, from 17th century Zombies in Defoe, Lovecraftian chavs in Cradelgrave, titanic-meets-Event-Horizon Leviathan, and British BPRD run by evil David Bowie Cabalistics Inc and its spin-off Absalom; and the REALLY weird stuff that defies easy categorisation like XTNCT and Indigo Prime. And more, this is just scratching the surface with what I could come up with off the top of my head.

>>78236076
That was incredible.
>>
>>78236908
I know, right? On the surface it's a small little story with a fairly predictable twist, but it's the other twist that really got my attention. Dredd didn't tell Hershey. Dredd went behind her back to sabotage a Justice Dept. patchwork measure because he disagreed with it. And he wasn't entirely wrong about it either, but he's purposefully undermining authority from the shadows. This is a Dredd who has clearly learned his lesson from the Mechanismo fiasco back in McGruder's time: if you're gonna sabotage a Justice Dept. measure, Don't Get Caught.
And what's particularly heart-breaking about this for me is that lately, Hershey seems to have been trying to reach out to Dredd and show that no matter what's happened before, she still trusts him. She trusted him with the fate of the Ranger program, she trusted him to find a weapon to fight back against the Titan mutants in Enceladus, she stalled mob lawyers until Dredd could make a case against their boss in Block Judge, and even in today's Megazine she puts pressure on another Mega-City on Dredd's request. She wants Dredd to know she still trusts him and his judgment, but Dredd is too busy finding sneaky ways to fulfill his vision for the city before he cops it.
He actually pushed Beeny into joining the Council of Five, also in today's Megazine, feeling that they needed a "voice of dissent." What does that say about his trust in Hershey's mandate right now?
>>
>>78237326
One other way to look at it is that he's looking less at Hershey as an individual (who he likes) and more at the Chief Judge the institution. Chief Judges almost inevitably go bad and have to be put down, usually when there's nobody willing to stand up to them. That's usually Dredd, as Hershey herself has bitterly commented, but he won't be around forever. Neither will Hershey. Undermining the unilateral power of the office is bad in the reign of Hershey, but her successor could be nowhere near as good. For all Dredd knows, it could be another Cal, or someone even worse! Seeding the Council with people who take after Dredd but who are less inflexible and more capable of navigating the politics will allow him to continue the work of safeguarding the city (and the Judges) from themselves after he's gone.
>>
>>78237326
>>78237751
God, I love how complex Dredd can be
>>
Not OP, but I've been reading Dredd for the past few months, and now on prog 529. It's been fucking terrifying watching the series go from this light-hearted romp to this horrible totalitarian nightmare. Speaking of nightmares, prog 528 had the judges inducing horrible hallucinations in a man because he spoke out against the justice department on his television program. What he was doing was legal, otherwise it would've simply been shut down, but it was still "dangerous" thinking. Christ, what a horrible situation.
>>
>>78237751
What's absolutely gripping about this current subplot is that Dredd is growing increasingly aware of his own mortality, and he has a vision for Mega-City One that I like to think was kickstarted by Fargo's dying words, so now he's constantly thinking about that, making plans and moving people around to ensure that future. The problem is he's so goal-oriented, he's running over Hershey, whom he himself pushed into the role of Chief Judge, a role that he has consistently avoided. And now, it's almost like he considers her to be compromised, like a failed experiment, and is constantly sabotaging her patchwork measures to bring the city back from the brink of Chaos Day and maneuvering people around to challenge her. She's changed, adapted to the role, sacrificed her own desire to remain a street judge for the sake of the city, and now Dredd treats her like an obstacle. And yet, Hershey still respects and trusts him. She's not gone into McGruder territory yet. Which is what makes this all more depressing. And the best part, the absolute best part, is that neither side of the argument is entirely on the right.

>>78237942
Not gonna lie: there is literally no ongoing comic right now that I'm as invested in as Judge Dredd.

>>78237968

I understand I've got A Letter to Judge Dredd coming up relatively soon. As a libertarian, reading this is making me sick to my stomach, but I can't put it down. It's just too damn good. I'm very impressed at how morally grey things have gotten.
>>
>>78238396
To elaborate: I understand the need for the judges to be able to dish out instant sentencing. However, they should not be a political body. They claim to be for the people, but every dictatorship that issues the same cry has been shown to only be interested in keeping itself in power. So while due process is gone for practicality's sake, the fact that the Judges are beholden to no one but themselves is the greatest sin. Sorry for the rant, I'm just riled up.

Rant away, man. Judge Dredd is meant to do that. It's meant to build a world bad enough that it's actually really hard to argue against the judges, but at the same time it's painfully obvious that life under them is terrible enough that you wonder if it's even worth it. Humanity isn't thriving, it's merely surviving, and the question becomes is it worth surviving like that? Is life worth it if it's an empty, joyless, meaningless trip through a dull, violent, painful world? The idea of "it's wrong but it's right but it's wrong but..." is deeply embedded into the DNA of Judge Dredd, and while it remains a cautionary tale on the dangers of totalitarian police states, it's also made it a much deeper story than your usual 1984 pastiche.
Also, you're gonna love Origins, the early 2000s story where you can see how the judges rose to power. Just how bad things had gotten.
>>
>>78238645
I understand Booth nuked the world, judges kicked the door in, threw away the constitution, seized power for themselves. How convenient for them to suddenly go from a simply policing body under legislation to the top dogs of the country. Nothing suspicious there, no sir. Judge Fargo is the paragon of justice.

Father of the Law, yup yup yup, nothing wrong about that. But yeah, what's great about Origins is that it gives a ton of depth by providing an almost day-to-day analysis of all the events that lead to the world of Dredd as we know it, while still beautifully avoiding turning the judges into a force for good. The secret origin thing is not used to excuse away all the excesses of the judicial system, but rather just to frame them, to show the kind of world that necessitated that sort of intervention, while never shying away from showing that things haven't gotten better since then; only a different kind of worse.
John Wagner has recently gone on record saying that he likes to every now and then write a story reminding people of how bad the judges are, and that regardless of all the cool action and twisted villains and two-knuckled heroics, Judge Dredd should never be something we want to happen in our world. Not now, not ever.

Wagner has entered my pantheon of greatest comic writers. The balancing act he pulls, "it's wrong but it's right but it's wrong", as you put it, is amazing. A lesser writer would have crumbled, but the fact that he's been doing this for almost 40 years is a testament to his skill.

Like I said, I'm a libertarian. Justice Department is a classic case of "who watches the watchmen." Consciously, they feel they're working for the greater good, promoting order. But all that training can't fully erase human behavior, and deep deep down, in the pit of their souls, all they want is power and will try to keep it at any cost.

The way he's developed what could otherwise turn into a very rigid, stale character into such an extremely three-dimensional dude while still keeping all of what makes him work for such a vast array of stories is nothing short of masterful. At any given time, for any given story, Dredd can be a faceless authoritarian thug, a badass antihero, a conflicted old man, a dauntless detective and a scheming bastard, all without ever coming off as OOC. And while a lot of it can be traced to Alan Grant and even Pat Mills' original vision for the character, it's definitely been Wagner's ship for the longest time, one that he has captained marvelously while still allowing others to sail smoothlessly along with him.

It's reaaally awkward. The first half is OK, but the mystery of the premise is hampered by some really obnoxious satire that isn't really funny. Doesn't help that Dredd himself feels like he's being dragged along for like 3/4ths of the issue. The art's OK, but overall it's no substitute for the UK stuff.

It gets worse.

Around this time, the strip was dealing with the main writers basically divided: Alan Grant wanted to turn Judge Dredd into an ultra ultra bleak send up of fascism played totally straight while John Wagner was realizing that doing so basically was making readers CHEER fascism and basically wanted to stop it/undo the damage Grant was causing.

The end result was Necropolis, but what should have been a turning point for the franchise went to shit when Wagner let Garth Ennis write the conclusion to the entire "Democracy" storyline and Ennis blatantly thought Alan Grant's "100% pro-fascist, fuck yeah!" idea was greatWagner was a pussy and undid EVERYTHING Wagner was working towards to curb Alan Grant's derailment of the series.
>>
>>78240419
Yep.

Garth fucked shit up, so badly that Wagner had to do serious damage control as soon as he could wrestle the strip away from Garth.

He ended up a bunch of one off stories where the Judges ended up restoring democracy in spite of winning the referendum in piecemeal fashion.

What Alan Grant wanted was to keep Dredd as a brutal faceless totalitarian overlord, while Wagner vied to make him into more of a three-dimensional antihero. Of course, there's an irony at work here in that Pat Mills and John Wagner had the same divide, but back then it was Wagner trying to keep Dredd as a bastard and Mills wanting to make him an antihero, but anyway... Grant always enjoyed writing the city and Anderson way more than he enjoyed writing Dredd, and the real turning point was the end of Oz. Grant wanted Dredd to either kill or jail Chopper, while Wagner wanted him to take a more honorable way out and let him go. And in the end, Wagner won out while Grant left to write Anderson and Strontium Dog, among other things. Necropolis was all Wagner (and Ezquerra, of course).
I have no idea where you're getting the idea that Alan Grant was in any way pro-fascist, though. No Dredd writer has ever been pro-fascist, and Alan Grant is second only to Pat Mills in his rabid anti-fascism. Just look at his Anderson stories, especially in the 90s.
As for the Democracy bit, it's clear that Ennis was burdened with having to put the final nail in that storyline's coffin, and did so by giving Dredd the need to let the people decide what they wanted. It did gloss over the heaviest of Dredd's own personal conflicts, but it legitimized the rule of the judges' Law while still leaving a very strong window for doubt, which was the incredibly small amount of actual citizens who actually cared to vote. It wasn't a clear-cut decision, and it was definitely not pro-fascist either, though it was certainly pro-Dredd as a character, which is definitely one of the weaknesses of Ennis' run: he loves the character far too much to mess with him the way Wagner does at his best.

Yep. And frankly, I think he's a bit too harsh on himself. Sure, he's not good at actually developing Dredd as a character, but at least his stories were, in general, less mindless and more entertaining than Millar's or Morrison's. His run was fluff but it was good fluff, at least for my money. And Emerald Isle is still hilarious.
>>
>>78240535
>>78240535
Yeah, its kind of a shame really. Garth had a good point (seriously, the election statistics for the referendum match up to actual British election statistics so well its scary), but he went a bit too far in the "and this justifies the fascism" direction
Wagner is a master of creating a scenario where something seems like a reasonable solution without really commenting on the morality of it

It's so fucking compelling to read small stories like The Beating, where you get on the surface a cool little vignette into a day in the life of Dredd, but as soon as you start reading between the lines and connecting the dots you can see just how much stuff is going underneath. It's gotten to the point where big epics are kind of a breather from all the heavy build-up and slow-burn character development of the weeklies, where you can just enjoy Dredd being a more straightforward badass antihero, though not even those are safe from experiments in storytelling (Trifecta) or heavy status quo shifts and downer endings (Day of Chaos).

Its was less democracy and more society. The judges were formed in direct response to the complete failure of the trial by jury system in urban areas, as rampant crime and corruption conspired to create a cycle of criminals being charged, then either bribing or harassing their way through the overstretched court rooms.
Democracy, at least in the US, just flew apart at the seams at the same rate as the missiles Booth launched. After such a fundamental betrayal of the people's mandate, naturally they turned to the Judges as the only government branch that tried to hold the President accountable

I love how the world of Dredd operates more or less in realtime, characters are human, complex and flawed, they age, die and stay dead. I wish DC and Marvel operated like this in at least one of their major titles. In fact this is what the Ultimates universe and Earth 2 should have been, but of course they drokked it up. Especially Earth 2, that was heartbreaking.

I've only read a little Dredd but I don't imagine he'd stand for throwing shit all over the place.
>>
new IDW Judge Dredd came out, you guys like it?
>>
>>78257414
Nnnot really. I liked the first half, then the second lost me pretty fast. Still gonna give it a chance, but it's nothing to write home about just yet.

anyone else pick up this week's issue? I'll wait and see how it develops but I'm not too happy with the idea that MC1 and everyone in it is gone for good, hopefully its just a side story.

Remember, this is IDW-verse Dredd, not the main 2000AD universe which is still going... maybe not well, but it's still going. 'sides, I'm willing to bet there's gonna be a rewind button at the end of the arc anyway. Grud knows it wouldn't be the first time time-travelling has appeared in Dredd...

>Remember, this is IDW-verse Dredd, not the main 2000AD universe which is still going
oh I see, didn't realize that. It was the first time I'd ever actually picked up an issue of Judge Dredd other than reading what gets posted in these threads. I don't think they have 2000ad at my lcs...
>>
>>78262461
They should have at least the Case Files, which collect all of the actual 2000AD Dredd, all the way back to the very first 1977 strips.
IDW's Dredd is all set in its own continuity, though some of their miniseries (Year One, Anderson, Mega-City Two) could easily fit in the main one as well.
>>
>>78262461
2000ad can be hard to find outside the UK. Your best bet is to get it digitally from comixology or direct from 2000adonline.com,

It's a lor cheaper that way too

Who's better and sexier, Anderson or Hershey?

Oh, goddamn. I didn't realize they made a Mortis figure.

Soon we'll have all four.

I miss when Dredd was about how stupid and degenerate the cits were, it's just not the same now that everyone left is a multiple PTSD survivor hardcase (Or should be)
>>

>Its a bit sad.

No shit, it never works well for classic characters. They killed Otto Sump!
>>
>>78264148
Anderson is probably the all around better character, mostly on account of Alan Grant developing her a lot more. As much as I love Hershey, her own solo series was pretty crap. And it doesn't help that all the most interesting stuff about Hershey as a character revolves around her role and her relationship with Dredd.
That said, she's still my personal favorite. Especially nowadays.

Technically it's more like 30 days for that offence, but given that this whole board counts as criminal conspiracy to deal comic books I'll allow it.

There used to be someone who collected a chronological Dredd thing, combining entire storylines, including the Megazine.

Wish I could remember where they put it up.

That was exactly what I expected to happen from the first few pages.

I think I've read too much Dredd.

Any idea what it was named?
>>
Can I request a storyline? It's the Dredd story from Prog 1955 called Islands. Apparently it's about a kid with autism. Autism in media interests me, so much obliged.
>>
>>78236076
I was so fucking worried. I thought Dredd had finally lost what little compunctions he had about killing a guy in cold blood. In a story by Wagner no less.

I was kind of expecting it, but I must say I'm proud of 2000AD for only pulling the punch for the readers, and not for Mega City One at large
I can't think of any publisher out there would let their most well known character commit murder by police brutality and let it stand as canon, even in just the public perception
>>
>>78262383
Talking about the new Issue #1? This is just a miniseries, right? I mean, IDW already has a run going.
>>

That other series ended.
