As a college radio DJ, I hate this too, but it's the way we have to do it thanks to FCC rules.
If there's a clean edit of the song, we will play that instead. However we play lots of new music on CDs that may or may not be edited. We do our best to screen the tracks that have profanity, but every once in a while a swear slips through.
The jarring cut you hear is the result of a DJ hitting a "Dump" button that skips over the last 5 seconds and prevents the swear from going over the air.
