What does /co/ think of this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFXybTZ0A6Y

It's the first short done by Don Bluth after parting Disney and it's really cute, with some neat characters and good waifus.
Mega link incoming.

Banjo was that one cartoon that I forgot about for a few years after seeing as a little kid and then couldn't remember the name of. When I asked my mother if she remembered the cartoon movie about the little lost orange kitten in the city that wasn't Oliver in Company, the other one with the three strange colored burlesque cats, she told me I must have dreamed it. Then for a couple more years I just believed that it was a dream I'd had, until I found it online and realized it was real. I took out of the experience a tendency to question reality.

Yeah MPC-HC and VLC just screenshot the original ratio from the DVD, I just make sure to force the ratio to 640x480 to fix it up like the video in OP.

Same here, and also whenever he does fur (like that webm, or secret of nimh) I've always interpreted it as dirty as shit. Dunno why.

Also realistic animal proportions with cartoon faces...

Also, to OP, ripping DVDs with Handbrake is always preferable. Turn detelecine on "default", and frame rate "same as source". If there is an option to "remember aspect ratio", turn that on as well.
>>
The animation is quite fluid and very nice, but I always felt like there is something off about Don Bluth's character designs, especially when he draws anthropomorphic characters.

With these cats in particular it bothers me that they sort of don't look catlike. Especially the face I suppose. Maybe they're leaning too much towards dogs. Those big button noses definitely don't seem right and none of Zazu's trio even has ears.

Why is it so rare to see animation starring cats where they actually act, move, and look like cats? By comparison, dogs are very popular in cartoons but also very often emulate typical dog character, looks, and behavior pretty well, even when anthropomorphized to a higher degree. Sometimes cats come off decently cattish, but usually that is confined to cases where the cat is a more minor role like a villain rather than the protagonists.

Pic related is an example. They got the various dogs across pretty well, but Oliver himself, the main character, was pretty bland and not especially kitten-like, though I'll admit he at least looks alright. Still, except for the way he was supposed to be a bit of an outcast and set apart from the other characters, he could have just as easily been a puppy and he wouldn't be much different. Makes me suspect the people on that movie just weren't cat people.

>>

>>78197952
Aren't cats really complex, with each being virtually different from one another? That could explain that part.
The people who work on board in these films probably don't have a cat to work with to help with the animations. As for acting...well you could always stereotyoe them, but mire often than not it's always a tired cliche, and as far as looking like cats and starring them, yeah there isn't much of that in animation anywhere as far as I know.
It's a damn shame.

I just watched A Troll in Central Park last night and what good god I can see why he was forced to stop making movies. That was some over-animated shit. His studio loved rotoscoping unnecessary things and it just looked bad.
>>
>>78204922
I wonder what went wrong during production of THAT movie. With Lair, they want to spend their newfound money mostly on hiring a really good scriptwriter. I guess they had some rather unpleasant experiences during I'm A Bad Troll: The Movie.

After Titan AE, Rockadoodle, Thumbellina and Troll it's pretty clear that Don Bluth's studio just didn't have writing talent. Those movies lacked what Secret of Nimh, American Tale, Land before Time, and All Dogs go to Heaven had.
>>
>>78205289

>>
>>78205523
The reviews speak volumes. The acting was bad, the writing was bad, plotholes aplenty. And no one saw it. There's a reason why it sunk Don Bluth and it wasn't because it was good.
>>
>>78199433
I'm currently living with 4 cats that I can compare and while they do all have different personalities, they all exhibit some of the same base behaviors common to the species. They can all be totally aloof or skittish depending on the situation, they all demand attention when they want it, go and do whatever they please, like curling up in warm places, bat at string, etc. Yes, if you employ cat-like qualities in a cartoon cat it will always either be or become a cliche, but that happens with every species and it's really not so bad. It's kind of a useful tool in some cases of anthopomorphizing. What surprises me is the amount of cat protags that completely lack any of the old cat cliches at all. Too often cat characters come off too bland, and real cats aren't bland at all. And again, it's strange in contrast to dogs, which consistently come with a certain set of cliches no matter what role in the story they play even though they are extremely overdone.
>>
>>78205289
I heard they were handed the script to Titan AE from another studio and given no time to fix anything.
>>
>>78205963
It can be attributed to not many animators bothering or don't have a cat that they could use for reference, or they base it off one for all.
Some cat characters in anime I have seen tend to be better at being much more diverse than the stereotypical cat though.
>>
>>78204739

Why, aren't you just a bag of negativity?

Nobody is obligated to like a thing, but you are just plain lying. Lots of critics liked the movie, it made decent money over the years, and Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs up.

It did not make Fox happy because several million dollars went into the movie over the course of the 90s without any progress done. Before Bluth was brought to finally do more than 0 seconds of footage (0 seconds were shot by other people who "worked" on it before) the movie project already cost Fox too much, who were throwing money into the project like naive dumdfucks throwing money at a particular scam-tastic Kickstarter. Fox did not let Bluth animate over 80 minutes, and when the movie was done they literally expected the next Star Wars. Enough people did NOT see it because of the public perception that "2D cannot do serious" and "it's kids' stuff". Fox blamed the movie for being 2D (because that makes sense) and offered Don to direct the next movie in CG (Ice Age). Don said fuck you to Fox and quit.

And the reason I decided to watch Titan AE was because some self-titled reviewer on YouTube claimed it was full with plot holes. I had to check for myself. There weren't any. "Insufficiently explained for me and I didn't get it" is not the same thing as "impossible due to logical contradictions", WHICH IS WHAT A FREAKING PLOT HOLE IS.

Next think you'll probably say is that The Iron Giant is a bad movie because it was a box office bomb in 1999.
