Originally, she was just an average girl. Her desperation and the fact that she was a tool is what made her the object of scorn. It was also kind of funny how little people generally gave a fuck about her because she was so forgettable.
But when they brought on new writers, the joke became that the world was outright malicious towards Meg, and she was an ugly, filthy, petty, pathetic person with absolutely no dignity.
